36-year-old mother arrested for abandoning newborn infant in Tokyo park

Police in Tokyo have arrested a 36-year-old woman on suspicion of child abandonment after she left her newborn infant in a park’s public toilet.

According police, Kaoru Urushihara, a resident of Edogawa Ward whose occupation is unknown, left her baby girl wrapped in a towel in a park in Komatsugawa at around 7:15 a.m. on Monday after giving birth at home, Kyodo News reported. She then called her family and told them what she had done. Her family called 110.

Police quoted her as saying, “I didn’t think I could raise a child and because I couldn’t make ends meet as a single mother.”

Police said the infant was taken to hospital and was in good condition. No information was released on who the infant’s father is.

“I didn’t think I could raise a child and because I couldn’t make ends meet as a single mother.”

Her fears are very real. There is no support for single mothers. However, that does not justify leaving her baby in a park toilet.

This seems to happen every week.

yet the government can spend 1.6 billion on Abe’s funeral. How many single parents could that help? Shame on Kishida

Well said

Rather than rag on the woman like the rest of the crusty expats here I'll just say this.

This is a clear-cut example of the lack of a support network for single mothers in Japan. This woman went through hell, the fact that she thought leaving her newborn in a restroom was her best option shows the mental duress she was under.

These stories will never go away until Japanese society and culture changes, and we all know how long that takes.

There is ONE “Baby Hatch” in the entirety of Japan, located in Kyushu.

They are, apparently looked DOWN upon, so you can imagine how much assistance they receive from any government organization. You’re in Japan now, it’s not like where you came from.

Some things affect us on a whole new level after we become parents. Spending half of the week at home with wifey and my 1 year old, changing diapers, being in charge of his showers, going together for his vaccines, carrying the heavier groceries, planning and applying all sorts of DIY home improvements for his safety, raising my voice and giving "the eye" once in a while to show him he can't have everything, I can't help wondering how on earth a mother can raise a child alone, even if money is no concern.

Abandoning a pregnant/single mother should be one of the worst of all crimes, punished by forced labor, earnings automatically sent to mother's account until the child is 18.

Many problems in society starts just right there, neglected/fatherless kids.

Give your baby to me I will taking care and raise the baby like my own child.

Then let actions speak. There are certainly countless of single mothers who feel the same way and would love to "abandon" their children.

Abandoning your own flesh and blood in the 21st century.

My darling.. if you can't afford to have a baby it's ok, if you don't have a job it's ok, if you help your elderly it's ok, if you're single / not married / alone it's ok, nobody will blame you for that .. seriously trust me.. but please don't have sex

Yes, the poor should not have sex, right? That should be a privilege only reserved for the financially privileged, right?

...right?

false.

..You say, then go on to confirm what I said in your next statement...

rich or not rich it doesn't matter .. it's your choice. All time. You can have sex being rich or not rich. But having sex comes with risks and duties. If you do it without knowing it, you are neither rich nor poor, you are a reckless person.

Poor woman. It is not easy for a mother to abandon her baby. And in a toilet room. She did not commit a crime. The baby should be given back to her and she should be helped to raise and bring up her baby.

Their culture is not going to change by definition, it's their culture.

At least she didn’t flush the baby down the toilet…give the girl that much credit…as many you have read about DID.

Its called a baby box, lady.

And this is normally the kid of immature behavior one normally associates with 15-18 year old HS girls, not a 36 year old woman.

For God's sake, what the hell is the matter with you, lady? On a park bench? Are you kidding me?

Well assuming it's not abuse / rape, what can we say? My darling.. if you can't afford to have a baby it's ok, if you don't have a job it's ok, if you help your elderly it's ok, if you're single / not married / alone it's ok, nobody will blame you for that .. seriously trust me.. but please don't have sex, you don't have to, there is no law that forces you to have sex, you are 36's old and you know that if you have sex you could have a baby, having sex is not a universal right, no obligation, is always your choice remember it, your body your choice, please be smart for you and for our society which will now have to repair for you and the poor soul you gave birth.

@Finally Rich What makes you think fathers are abandoning these pregnant/single mother why should it be a crime when some of these mothers don't know who the "FATHER" is because of something she is doing out side of the "NORM" lets not say this is fatherless abandonment thing only. Its about all around responsibility period its great that you want to be Mr. Dad but don't try to make this problem a man's problem when it also women too!!
