36-year-old woman arrested for leaving one-month-old daughter in trash container

Police in Hofu, Yamaguchi Prefecture, have arrested a 36-year-old unemployed woman on suspicion of parental neglect after she left her one-month-old daughter in a trash container.

According to police, Hiroe Okada placed the infant, wrapped in a blanket, in a trash container outside a nursery at around noon on Thursday, Fuji TV reported. A nursery employee found the infant a few minutes later and contacted the police.

Police said the baby was not injured.

Okada, who had remained in the vicinity, called 110, and said she had “thrown out” her baby. Police went to the nursery and arrested her at the scene.

WTF?!!?

Okada, who had remained in the vicinity, called 110, and said she had “thrown out” her baby. Police went to the nursery and arrested her at the scene.

I'm guessing she's got mental problems, BUT I'm glad she at least called the cops herself about what she had done.

At least she had the wherewithal to call the police otherwise that poor infant may have died. Cases like this really make me wish that by law, one needs to pass a series of psych evaluations and test ls to obtain a license to have a child.

Very sad case of mental illness which is rife in this country.

I'm really relieved that she did the right thing to call the police for her crime. I hope she gets help. I'm sure this is just the "tip of the iceberg." I'm happy that the baby is safe.

Just a wild guess..

Postpartum depression at it's finest.

OFC, there are a million ways she could've handled better this situation, but, let's be honest..

Since the article doesn't mention a father I'm guessing she's a single mother that is unemployed and past her prime days, almost at her 40s... Her head was probably way out of where it should be.

The fact that she wrapped the baby in a blanket instead of just throwing it away shows that she had at least a bit of concern. And since she called the cops herself, either she had a wild change of heart or she wanted to go to jail herself and have her child to be taken care by some child care institute..

Not the best for both by far.. but in her desperate head it probably was a better option than just trying to make do inside the Japanese society where sex, unwanted pregnancies and abortions are taboos.

She sounds like a psycho. What kind of mother would put baby in a trash bin.

The fact that she wrapped the baby in a blanket instead of just throwing it away shows that she had at least a bit of concern.

Plus, choosing a nursery as the location, where she correctly assumed someone who cared for children would hear the crying and find it, also speaks to her concern for the child.

She put it in a blanket outside a nursery according to this article and called the police. The baby is safe. Baby hatches and councilor support, economic support, are needed. I feel sorry for her, if this information is enough to understand what happened. Life is sometimes very difficult.

She was obviously stressed and very depressed about her life and saw nothing good in her future. I am so glad she did what she did and told the police right away. She did not want any harm to come to her baby.

How about putting the baby up for adoption?

She doesn’t seem to be of sound mind does she. I guess she couldn’t cope and it appears in this case that she had no intention of hurting the child. It’s terribly sad, she needs support and help nit punishment.

Japanese culture: Never ask for help. Never ask for money from friends. Never look weak. Never expect friends to help with your problems. No wonder this women was not of sound mind.

Sad but trending news it’s no wonder they have an issue with graying population. RiP

This is EXACTLY why Japan needs to step up their training of new mothers/mothers on post partum depression. I asked my wife after she gave birth if anyone came to her and spoke to her anything about depression or thoughts of harming the baby or anything of the sort or a follow up check up on her mental state after giving birth. She never heard any of this!

I would rather see commercials on post partum depression help services all over Youtube, TV and other platforms than the unimportand rubbish we are forced to watch before we can skip it.

The good thing is that she informed the police, and the baby is safe now.
