Police on Thursday arrested a 37-year-old man for allegedly sexually assaulting a 65-year-old bedridden woman whom he had been taking care of at a nursing home in Soga City, Chiba Prefecture.

Masahide Akiyama, 37, who is an assistant nurse, was arrested for allegedly assaulting the victim by touching her breasts in her room at the nursing home around 8 p.m. on June 18. According to police, the victim, who cannot speak, wrote about him in her diary, and her family found it.

Akiyama has been working for the nursing home since 2004, helping patients bathe and change clothes. Police said he at first admitted to the allegation but now denies everything.

Oh come on. That sounds ridiculous. "Touching her breast" -- well, he is bathing and dressing her, is he not? Sounds to me she phantasized something in her diary, and the hysterical family (which shoved her off to the nursing home in the first place) now railroads some poor slob who is just doing his job -- the job the family does not want to do.

What on earth is a 37 year old man doing bathing and dressing a woman old enough to be his mother? Can't they employ more female care workers?

If I were 65 and needed care, I think I'd stink rather than let a man wash and dress me.

Cleo,

It takes a man’s physical strength – or truely Amazonian women, to do the job. Thus there are many men as nurses, helpers, and caregivers for both sexes. For room visits, helping the patient stand, get to the toilet, etc., it is not always possible for two to attend, given staffing levels and cost controls.

For the task of bathing, it the patient truly needs physical assistance, it is likely to be a male/female team that assists. Privacy is gone.

This is not to condone sneaking a feel - but in dressing a person, all body parts are going to be touched.

Agreed TJrandom, but I'd say its more a take on professionalism than just physical strength based on gender. If the healthcare worker was doing something out of the ordinary line of work, then yes he should be punished for it. But if he is innocent and was just doing his duty then its wrong for him to be prosecuted.

Well he admitted it initially and probably realised later that he could dispute the allegation but passing it off as an unfortunate necessity of his job hence later disputing the allegation.

I reckon he did it in a pervy way though...

I used to be a nurse about 14 years ago in UK and dressed/bathed plenty of old bids. not a thrill I can assure you. the patients were given a choice of male/female nurse and hardly anyone had a preference.

If that's true, that's really messed up.

Even less of a thrill for the old bids, I should imagine. When there's nothing else left, an old bid needs to hang on to her dignity.

This is Japan. Much more likely that the cops intimidated him into signing a confession, keeping things easy for them. And when he got a chance to think about what he done, he backtracked.

I still think this story doesn`t make sense. He is is supposed to wash and and cloth a disabled person without touching bits and peaces? Ridiculous.

a video of the initial interview would reveal a lot.

The police agency here is very much opposed to videotaping their interviews, for understandable reasons. It would make a big dent in Japan´s amazing conviction rates, which usually rely on confessions, obtained while holding the suspect in custody. I, too, think that a video of the initial interview would reveal a lot here.
