Police in Ibaraki, Osaka Prefecture, have arrested a 37-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of corpse abandonment after the body of his 71-year-old father was found at their house.
According to police, the man, who has a history of mental illness, lived alone with his father, Sankei Shimbun reported. A friend of his father, concerned at not having heard from him since Feb 11, contacted police.
Police visited the man’s hometown Friday and found the body lying face-up in a tatami mat room. Police said there were bruises on the man’s face and added that an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

And I bet this poor man and his family never got the support they needed from the government to help with the man's mental illness.

That's some friend. Hasn't heard from the guy in just 2 days, calls the cops and they actually go. They must have been extremely close.

I don't understand the charge of corpse abandonment that we read about several times a year on JT. In this case, it looks like the old man may have been beaten, in which case this may have been a different crime, but in most cases it is some old person who seems to have died and the other person in the household not being able to cope with what to do with the corpse and leaving it in the house for an extended period of time. I could see fraud if the failure to report a death leads to continued collection of old age pension, or some other crime being covered up (homicide). I could understand corpse abandonment if the corpse was taken out and dumped some place in the forest or on a mountainside. But what is the deal with having a corpse in the house for a long time?

It's an charge that the Japanese police lay upon suspects for abandoning their responsibility in regards to a body. They charge this as a holding charge while they investigate the actual crime they intend to charge the person under.

Yes, thats Hachiko level loyalty from a friend. Who knows, maybe the father spoke to the friend about the poor relationship he had with his son and his friend put two and two together.
