Immigration in Indonesia likes to shake down rich foreigners. They did it to me at the airport. It's not as though 1000s of migrants are flooding into the country for work and a better life. They just like to use the immigration laws to extort money from foreign visitors.

The article is not clear what the exact crime is here, overstaying , working while on a tourist visa or going to the Papua region without proper permits.

Before we jump to conclusions and try to show Indonesia its place, isn't an immigration violation just that??

My guess is that their "misusing their limited stay permits." does not include working.  t has been years now, but in the past I always had the 'tip' ready to hand over at the immigration counter - IIRC about yen300, so not so much.  Anyone know the going rate these days?

If you have to bribe your way into or out of a country what's the purpose of going? Self-inflicted pain, whether physical, psychological or monetary is still self-inflicted pain.

This makes me wonder how many hundreds or thousands of Indonesians are staying illegally in Japan

Why? If you notice 33 other foreigners were caught as well, not like these guys were specifically targeted for being Japanese.
