No, there is no bias here! I have known many Vietnamese and this kind of reactions to problems are very common! Mostly due to pride or loss of face and Vietnamese tend to hold a grudge and let it grow and grow till it blows.

Lots of Vietnamese crime here. When the immigration push happened, the nepalis have been overall, well behaved. The Vietnamese have been responsible for a lot of crimes. Like stealing off farms, overrunning visas.

This is really bad news. Coincidentally, the local Vietnamese trainees invited me for dinner last night and we had a great time. They are very hospitable and warm people. Japanese are pretty hospitable to the Vietnamese trainees, too. There are a couple shady companies that have occurrences and things go bad. Even English teachers face pressures from staff companies which are similar to what trainees experience. We are all in the same boat.

The rate of crime rates among the Vietnamese living/working here will rise as more and more come here. It is said that many of the youngsters would resort to violence to deal with little frictions among themselves back in the home country besides the apparent lack of and ignorance of local laws and i am not surprised they have imported such behaviors here.

No, but dont expect them to stop, same as in the West.

Canada too, especially in Vancouver has had its rash of Vietnamese crime. Most of it gang related. However, Japanese gangs (mainly Yakuza) typically have a way of flushing out any competition, even if it means cooperating with the police. Thats the one positive thing about the Yakuza, over time they have kept out foreign gangs from gaining any traction here.

The Vietnamese population in Japan is the second largest after the Chinese. Therefore, the number of crimes is also high due to the large number of people in the first place.

However, the actual crime rate among Vietnamese is also high. This may have something to do with the fact that many Vietnamese already owe a lot of money when they enter Japan. This should be corrected by the Vietnamese government, and the Japanese government has a responsibility to both the Japanese and Vietnamese people as well as a need to request cooperation from the Vietnamese government.

There is also an analysis that the current situation of accepting foreign workers at low wages is a drag on Japan's ability to overcome deflation. For this reason, some LDP and Restoration Party members are advocating the abolition of the technical internship system, but the number is still small. Interestingly, there are no members of the opposition parties, the Communist Party of Japan or the Constitutional Democratic Party, who are making this argument.

I'm married to a Vietnamese and to be honest, I think Vietnamese people living in Japan aren't shocked by or disbelieving of Vietnamese crime in Japan. Certainly, they are disappointed. I still think the good outweighs the bad and Vietnamese, like other ethnic groups, will bring economic vitality to Japan in addition to filling entry-level jobs. I also agree that too much immigration isn't good, that balance is important. The number of Vietnamese has grown a lot but it's still a small number and immigration overall is still not comparable to other countries. Vietnamese know, themselves, that as a group they are likely to bring a bit more crime. They know the problems of their country. There is very little social trust in Vietnam and no strong institutions to rely on. Education levels are low and crime and violence are abundant. Again, despite such problems, the Vietnamese community is enterprising, on the whole, and good for the country. Japan cannot survive without workers. And I'll tell you one more thing: Vietnamese respect Japan even though some of the young uneducated Vietnamese that come may lack some basic sense.

Personally, I can’t and I won’t say anything against them. They were by far the best guest worker group in former East Germany, hard working, always friendly and with almost no incidents. The same after the fall of the iron curtain, although those internal crimes rose and they took over quite some smaller vegetable shops and convenience kiosks and such. But not so much more to complain. And here in Japan now, exactly the same. Delicious restaurants, always friendly neighbors, hard working and willing to educate themselves. There might be problems, most of them hearsay or rumors only, and even in this very bad contradicting example case here, limited to internal conflicts, not at all against other foreigners or even Japanese hosts. There are by far other ones to surely have a closer look with a magnifying glass, but not people from VietNam, although they might have changed a bit and are not totally 100% perfect anymore compared to earlier decades.

as I said I don’t want to sound biased… but Okubo neighborhood seems to have more immigrants than others and it’s not difficult to see the difference whether you want it or not. Am not categorizing westerners or not…

Look, crimes do happen. Like in every nation.There is no guns so most logical weapon a person can use is a knife. Is a nation of more than 125 million people so having a stabbing once a day isn't even rare. Just because this time it's a vietnamese doesn't mean most crimes comes from them or that their crime rate is high. Is just that it's more noticeable when it happen to them.

If you look at a crime clock of some countries, you would be amaze how much crime can actually happen every minute in a day. I just read not long ago a article that in india every 25 minute a women there commit suicide or a average of 60 in a day. So yeah, if you include a whole population, a lot of stuff can happen. You don't even want to know what the US average stabbing rate for a day is.

I do not believe a person resort to more crimes just because they came from different country. What lead to violence can be a lot of reasons. Disputes, poverty, stress etc.

I'm not surprised at all.
