Police in Fukuoka have arrested a 42-year-old man on suspicion of killing his ailing 75-year-old father.

According to police, Takayuki Tanaka, who was arrested on Sunday, is accused of repeatedly kicking his father Seiji in the face and chest at their home in Sawara Ward on Sept 21, Sankei Shimbun reported.

On the morning of Sept 22, Tanaka called 119 and said his father was not breathing. When emergency personnel arrived, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

However, the respondents noticed several bruises on the victim’s upper body and notified police of possible abuse.

He was taken to hospital where doctors noticed several bruises on his upper body and face

Police said Tanaka has admitted to abusing his father, who had recently become bedridden, but denied any intent to kill. He said he had become stressed out from looking after his father.

He will get a suspended sentence but will have to to find a real job instead of mooching off of somebody's pension

Oh, c'mon Japan! Every flipping day I read about some twat killing their parent or a parent killing heir child. When will Japan be ready to admit there is a huge problem with the family unit? It does not exist!

It's tragic and as usual, the full story or weight of the problems in this family's lives are not at hand to comprehend.

But it's not just exclusive to Japan. Happens all around the world. Sadly.

How do you know he's "mooching off" a pension?

They called it "their home", and said he was looking after the father. Can't do that and have a job

How do you know that a person can't have a job and look after an elderly or infirm relative?

And even if he was looking after the relative all the time; why would you make the mooching comment?

Do you think devoting yourself to an elderly parent is slacking, is that it?

Yet another example of elder abiuse from a carer left on their own. Carers need help, the governemnt should be providing help to stop this awful thing happening again.

I'm not condoning what he did, that is one sick bastard, but elderly people will continue to suffer abuse without government help and interventon in their care.

@ toasted - do you feel good defending a man who beat an old man to death, kind of silly isn't it, who cares if he was mooching or not, he murdered the poor man

What puzzles me is why do many Japanese abuse their older Parents? A older Parent if they are ailing needs your help!

It's not just a Japanese thing. Elder abuse is grossly under reported as essentially society doesn't care. Caring for someone, especially being the sole carer, is exremely stressful and soul destroying even if you love that person. Sometimes people snap, that's why they need help and monitoring.

Abusing parents or kids is not something unique to Japanese. But as Luddite said lack of help definitely contributes to these cases. The government won't step in until the family member is physically unable to take care of even his/herself. This is the real problem. But that said, murders like this probably don't even get reported in many countries because there are so many other crimes going on.
