45-year-old man arrested for arson after argument with mother over breakfast

Police in Kyoto have arrested a 45-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of arson after he set fire to his house following an argument with his 67-year-old mother over breakfast.

According to police, Satoshi Yoshizaki set fire to the house at around 8:45 a.m. on March 8, Kyodo News reported. Approximately 80 square meters of the three-story wooden house were completely destroyed. Yoshizaki was taken to hospital, suffering from smoke inhalation. His mother fled from the house and was not injured.

Yoshizaki was arrested on Monday. He was quoted by police as saying he got into an argument with his mother about the food they were eating for breakfast. He then went into his room and set fire to boxes of tissues.

Yoshizaki lived in the house with his mother and younger brother, 42, who had left for work at the time of the fire.

So, now this unemployed brat doesn't have anywhere to live as well. 46 years old and carries on like a spoiuled teenager.

Are they a little too old to still be living with their mommy? I sometimes don't get this culture.

At least he was getting fed and someone else was cooking for this low life. Not everyone can eat breakfast; especially with the luxury of someone else making breakfast.

Mommy and Daddy(?) should have booted both of them out of the house 20+ years ago.

It must be a hell of a breakfast.

Interesting take.

I wonder, though, if the same sort of thing would be said about an unemployed 40-ish woman.

Probably not.

It's almost as if, I don't know, we still expect men to be gainfully employed (fair enough in itself) but women not so much.

Congratulations Johnny! Now you get to move up to The BIG HOUSE! Enjoy your breakfast behind bars!

67 mother, 45 year old son. She gave birth to him when she was 22.

There is more to this story about her having children at such a young age and they stayed with their mother well into their 40s

What a 30/40 year old "unemployed man" does with his time everyday is beyond me.

4 or 5 days fully off from work and I start getting seizures

@finally rich

Seizures. That actually made me laugh.

I get what you’re saying. I start to go crazy if I have a whole week off too but that’s mainly because I have young kids and actually have more things to do at home than at work.

Anyway I’m not gonna judge living with mommy well into middle age but setting fire to tissues kind of speaks for itself! At least no one was killed.

Where to begin on this one? If he is hikkikomori he won’t be for much longer. Poor mother.

@Gaijinjland

Well, I don't judge grown ups living with their parents too, its actually a common practice in my home country to have 3 or even 4 generations living under the same roof and things like full time nursing homes are the very last resort, but how.on.earth. can someone at this guy's age survive doing absolutely nothing for more than a month is beyond me. This is exactly what happens when you try to educate your children too late, lots of similar stories. At least the mother is alive.

Poor guy probably can't cook, he's down on his luck and stressed out. At least the mom could make him a nice breakfast! Maybe with a happy full belly, he'd be in a better mood to find a job.

No job, no prospects. Just freeloading off mom and| complaining about the food and her cooking. Well, this should be the last straw and no hospital visit is coming from mom unless it's to (censored) the IV.

He should have taken after his younger brother.

And why was the gainfully employed younger brother still living at home? Probably to protect Mom from the crazy older brother.

Looks like he is not all there so needs some help. There's plenty of work out there apparently so not being able to find a job doesn't hold water.

I see a lot of peoples comments on how much of a low life this guy is for living with his mother for so long, but I suspect that he probably has some metal issues that make him unable to function normally. Japan tends to brush mental health under the rug, so I wouldn't be surprised to hear if this man actually wasn't all put together.

There are more than one way around that challenge. He can boil water for cup of noodles and can use a microwave for frozen meals, and even a toaster. My kids can do those things and even make omerice.

Still, I think things will really hit him hard when he's in prison and he has to follow orders. I felt more sorry for his mom than she sacrificed for him and this is how he repays her.
