45-year-old patient arrested for killing another patient at hospital in Fukuoka

Police on Tuesday arrested a 45-year-old hospital patient for allegedly beating another patient to death in the same ward at a hospital in Hakata, Fukuoka Prefecture. Shuichi Sato was arrested for allegedly beating Hiroaki Tobimatsu to death at 3 a.m. in their ward.

According to police investigations, the two -- who were childhood friends -- started drinking alcohol in the ward around 5 p.m. on Monday. Hospital staff heard the two arguing throughout the night. Sato was quoted by police as saying, “I didn't like his attitude. He was always strutting and acting like he was superior to me." However, he denies intent to kill, police said.

Hospital staff on night duty said they did not know that there was alcohol being consumed in the ward.

Yup! What a ridiculous statement! Was anybody actually working in the hospital? How do they monitor patients? Do they monitor patients?

Reconfirming note to self - Never go to a Japanese hospital!

Monitor patients? well the time is usually fixed for nurses to visit the patients ward. Unless they get a nurse call at night, they will not check the patients unless it is an ICU. A patient can get out from the building premises if they want as there are no security to prevent them from doing so.

2 middle aged men, at least one of whom had a violent temper and the physical capability to use violence against others. Would YOU step close enough to smell their breath? I sure as hell wouldn't. As for monitoring, some patients don't actually need any. Depends on the situation.

Wish it said why they were in hospital, because it's a bit of a confusing story without it. Perhaps they were psychological patients, that would explain the gap in info.

Either the whole floor was full of the deaf or everyone was AFRAID of the two patients. They might have been "unemployed" FEAR ruled the hospital that night!! Doctors, nurses and patients AFRAID to confront two noisy patients. Japan is safe is you MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!!!!!!

Another Japanese killed in a violent/unusual/ritualistic/-self-inflicted manner. Next obvious news from Japan... ?

Aren't hospital supposed to be quiet (for obvious reasons)? Must make people wonder about the quality of doctors and nurses here.

mikihouse, it says in the article it states quite clearly that staff heard the two argue "throughout the night".

Dear readers-please read the story and THINK!!! The whole hospital ignored these clowns and the comfort and safety of the other patients!! Why did the hospital workers LET it happen??? They were AFRAID to do anything. There is so much dark menace in the story you can taste it. It is Japan and this type of inaction happens everyday in thousands of different ways. It's not a hospital story,it's a commentary on Japanese SOCIETY

This is madness, the hospital is responsible and should be sued by the victims family

He beat his FRIEND to death...I sure would hate to see what he does to people who aren't his friend.

Did anyone notice that they said he beat him to death...beat him to death with WHAT? his bare hands or a bed pan?

If that's what it's like after you get into the hospital can you imagin what it must be like in the Waiting Room !!!

The Fascinating aspect of this is the Hospital staff must have told all the other patients to be patient!! Lets examine Mikihouse's comment for a moment. He focuses on the death of the patient and NOT on the fact that the nursing staff LET them drink because they might have thought it was better and safer for all. THIS is the MAIN point!!!!!!!! The safety and comforts of the other patients were sacrificed so that two men who may possibly be gangsters of pathological troublemakers could drink and shout from 5pm to 3am. Have anyone you ever noticed japanese averting their eyes from someone in distress or a maniac screaming?? International comparrisons are chilish and display woeful ignorance of Japanese society. A PATHETIC attempt by mikihouse to make trouble. If this story interests you then keep your eyes open in Japan you can find thousands examples of this aspect of Japanese society. It seems crazy to the viewer, but they must have a eason for doing it. In this case the men must have had frightening aspects that led the nursing staff and patients to avert their eyes.

I thought in Japanese hospitals all you had to worry about were the doctors and nurses...but now it's the patients too!

Scary!

Here's a hospital's lack of patient supervision. I've worked in a hospital in the US and worked night shifts, this woudl never have happened. Nurses are always alert to what's going on and noise is not tolerated. Sometimes in ICU when you get coma patients that are that way due to trauma you may hear them come in and out and when they do they scream-reliving the trauma but thats about it.

I've said this before and i'll say it again, japanese criminals are WELL honest!

No beating around the bush for this guy, his reason was simple, straight forward and well, plain stupid, but he was honest at least.
