Police in Chiba city have arrested an unemployed 46-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder after he tried to strangle to death a 3-year-old boy who had wandered away from his mother in a shopping mall.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 11:15 a.m. Thursday at the Aeon Style mall in Midori Ward. Police said the boy had come with his mother to the mall but he wandered off, Fuji TV reported.
Police said the suspect, Takehisa Nomura, came across the boy and led him away to another part of the mall where he strangled the boy but left him after a few seconds.
After the boy’s mother called for help, mall staff searched for the boy who was found lying on the floor in a shop about 30 minutes later. He was taken to hospital with a neck injury but was in a stable condition on Friday, police said.
Police said Nomura was seen with the boy on surveillance camera footage and was still in the mall when he was arrested. They said he has shown signs of being mentally disabled.© Japan Today
