A 46-year-old man has been arrested over the death of his elderly mother at their home in Tokai, Aichi Prefecture, police said Monday.
According to police, the man, who lived with his mother, called police to confess to her murder at around 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Fuji TV reported. Police found the 72-year-old woman lying on a futon mattress, bleeding from a knife wound to her throat. She was taken to hospital where she was confirmed dead a short time later. The man was arrested at the scene.
Police say the man has confessed to attempting to strangle his mother to death before slashing her throat with a retractable utility knife, Fuji reported. However, he has so far given no motive.

If they don't have an article template made up already they really ought to to save on the time it takes to write it. Just circle the appropriate choices and fill in the blanks.
A _-year-old [son/daughter/mother/father] murdered their [father/mother/son/daughter] at their home in ___ Prefecture on _____ with a/by [baseball bat/knife/shaking/suffocation] because [they changed the channel/were fussing while having their diaper changed/wouldn't stop crying/no reason].
This pretty much covers the majority from the past months.

You really need to start looking around the world you live in if you think this is depressing. These kinds of incidents happen everywhere in the world, and in some cases more than here.
Be happy that it's only one or two, or maybe three or four a week here and not every day in every prefecture.

However, he has so far given no motive.
How about at 46 the guy was sick and tired of looking after his mom and didn't want to spend the next 10-20 years doing the same thing? This problem is only going to get worse with people living longer, spoiled kids being allowed to stay at home and no support for the families.

Strange, I read the headline and thought this was a recap of yesterday's killing. Yeah, Japan is a safe country, if you are not at home.

Agree with you Bob... but then again, that's what you get when you read the crime section.

it is crazy that grown people do not have enough sense to have nothing to do with other grown people

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/text/nn20120508f2.html The lack of meaningful forensic autopsy procedures in Japan probably means that murders go undetected. I am not trying to be alarmist but I do think that this type of crime is more prevalent than it would appear. If the murder had been commited with charcoal briquettes as in the "black widow" case and not with a knife slash to the throat, and the son had not phoned the Police to confess , would we be reading about this murder or another tragic accident? The link at the top of my post is to an article in Japan Times about the lack of postmortem examinations in Japan.
