48-year-old woman arrested for strangling mother to death


Police in Iwamizawa, Hokkaido, said Monday they have arrested a 48-year-old unemployed woman on suspicion of killing her 70-year-old mother.

According to police, Mayumi Takashima has admitted to strangling her mother Tomoko just after 12 noon on Sunday, Sankei Shimbun, Police said the woman called 110 at 2 p.m. and said she had killed her mother.

Police rushed to the apartment and found Tomoko lying in the livingroom, with a cord bound around her neck. She was confirmed dead at the scene.

Police said Takashima has been speaking incomprehensibly since her arrest and has provided no motive for her actions.

You have to wonder whether in a society where acheiving personal identity as an adultis tied closely to work whether getting people into work might not lower the number of crimes by those identified by the media as unemployed.

Her speaking incomprehensibly is probably a sign of some kind of mental disease.

One would have to wonder if, there was ever a concern over the mental ability of the Daughter to attend to her Mother's daily needs, why such a situation was allowed to continue ?

I hope a thorough investigation is a bit more revealing here, and results in possible changes to Law relating to such matters.
