Five students were arrested for property damage after they were caught breaking 104 glass windows at an elementary school in Ichihara City. The students, all boys aged 13 and 15, are accused of climbing over the fence at Tatsumidai-Higashi Elementary School at the end of last December and breaking windows with pieces of wood and signposts they found around the campus.

According to police, the group was caught on security camera, and all five have admitted to the charges. They were quoted as saying they were bored. "It was just for fun," one boy told police.

Several similar incidents have taken place at schools in the area, and some of the boys have admitted to having participated in some of those acts of vandalism also.

Is this really the worse thing that happened in Japan today or is this just what the media wants us to think?

It's a good day in Japan when this is the worst news out there. If you want depression and a loss in humanity, read the World section.

The parents will probably have to pay for the damage. The 15 year old boy would be 3rd year junior high. If this goes on his record he can say goodbye to getting into a good high school.

On one hand, children are entitled to make some very dumb mistakes. On the other, they should be taught to fix their mistakes and clean up after themselves. Either they should repair all the damage and pay for materials, or their parents should teach that lesson.

GodDog - said it perfect. "Make them clean up the glass, and then teach them how to put new glass in, and show them the bill" I will also add they should do construction work to pay off the cost of the windows. Don't just let their parents IF Rich easyly pay or IF Poor let parents get punished by paying from thier own money.

"Cops must be sleeping for two month to bring this forward to publuc"!

No, this is their pace for doing things.

BTW, what's a "publuc"?

I agree with goddog's statement about making them clean up the glass etc.

Umm, considering this happened more then 2 months ago, I don't think theres any more glass for them to clean up. At least not there. Lots of other trash they can pick up though.

At least we have a motive clearly established!

maybe it was protest at what passes for an education system in this country.

Probably. That's pretty much why I did it in my hometown, at about the same age too. Daddy didn't pay - oh no no no.. i did. It took months. Family court did its job and it worked out. These kids? Let's hope for the best. But.. still, how is this news?

Bored boys smash windows for fun.(similar to the girls who gobbled down parfaits and dashed) Sure this is bad behavior and they need punishing but hardly anything that should be at the top of the crime section. Is this really the worse thing that happened in Japan today or is this just what the media wants us to think?

But when daddy pays he will forget the lesson of denial of their beloved youthful comforts such as video games, tv, internet etc. No lesson will be taught to the little uns.

I can imagine the pain that is building in the back pocket of the fathers!
