He will not serve a day of his prison term.

I understand it can be quite harsh to put someone in their 90s behind bars, but suspending the whole sentence would be too cruel to the husband who cant wake up and go to bed without his family in his thoughts. He should spend at least 1 year kept away from society, no one wants to lose his whole family for nothing.

Besides, where is this old guy's family in this story?

This is Ikebukuro, not the countryside, no one in their 80s, 90s needs to be driving around in this chaos, if you are unable to walk grab a taxi like everyone else.

You can bet your kidneys that you or I would not only get a longer sentence, but we would serve every minute of it, no debate on JT.

Nothing can bring back the Mana or Riko to the mourning father and family. The saddest part is this "bureaucrat" LIED about what happened and tried hard to escape as usual the fact that he killed 2 people blaming it on brakes malfunction.

I don’t consider myself elderly even though I have asthma, four major eye operations, gout, and a bad lower back…but the police gave me my gold license renewal.

I said thanks. I keep it as a picture ID. I knew I should not be behind a wheel. Gave up driving 11 years ago. Even quit my bike. Got rid of the car and bike. Never tempted at all!

Public transport is great here.

Yet two days ago you wrote

You want random testing. Sorry. No can do. I am healthy.

From what you wrote today, you’re far from healthy.

Nonetheless, it’s a good thing you don’t drive. If you did drive, you’d likely end up the chap in the article.

90 years old in prison? That could be tough

Will probably be a life sentence for him. Not that I have great sympathy..... he continued to blame the car instead of taking responsibility.

Suddenly he is in a wheelchair, but was capable of murder not long ago? Weird how that works isn't it?

He committed the crime, he should do the time. The more so as he made things worse for his victims by lying and trying to weasel out of responsibility for his actions.

Should have got longer. Sickening recklessness. 90 year olds DO NOT drive vehicles. End of story. No exceptions.

Rest in Peace to the poor mother and daughter.

Japan's criminal procedure law allows punishment to be suspended for convicts aged 70 and over as well as for those facing a risk of significantly harming their health or losing their lives.

What if they could lose their life? Didn't two people lose their life because of him? What kind of law is this? Ohhhh. This is one of those laws from 1920....ya know...back when fax machines were first made but still used in Japan.

His family should of took, away his keys

Why are there additional “cogs in the wheels” with the court Already decided the punishment is appropriate:?

The court also found a five-year prison term suitable for Iizuka even taking his age into consideration.” -

“Prosecutors will now study whether Iizuka, who is unable to walk on his own and uses a wheelchair, will spend time behind bars, considering his age and health.” -

If he is a "former top bureacrat" his jail terms might resemble those of Epstein in early 2000's.

Actually, this kind of "human-righty" law almost certainly has a post-war provenance and an import from the liberal West.

@Scorpion: You should look up the definition of murder.
