55-year-old woman arrested for pinching baby's eyelid at supermarket

A 55-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of injuring a baby girl by pinching her eyelid at a supermarket in Akashi, Hyogo Prefecture.

According to police, the incident took place at around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. A 27-year-old woman was shopping at the supermarket with her three daughters, one of whom, just a year old, was inside a pram, Sankei Shimbun reported. The 55-year-old woman approached the four and pinched the eyelid of the child in the pram.

Following the incident, an employee at the supermarket noticed the two women quarreling and called the police. The older woman was arrested after surveillance camera footage showed that she pinched the baby, police said.

The baby suffered internal bleeding and abrasions.

The woman was quoted by police as saying she got annoyed as the children were running around the supermarket, being noisy.

Eyelid pinching? That's a new one. One would assume the 1-year-old in the pram wasn't running around being noisy. Poor kid.

Blood in the eye... if not treated the baby could lose it. That's an assault pure and simple.

This crazy lady deserves any punishment that's coming.

Typical Japanese reaction: Annoyed by something, so take it out on the weakest being available. Classic hierarchical bullying culture.

Crazy woman and I hope the kid is okay. The behaviour some parents allow from their children is just all around annoying - and dangerous. Tell the kids to stop running, tell the mom her kids will get hurt, call over someone on staff but for heaven's sake, don't assault a baby!! More so one in a stroller who clearly wasn't running around and being a pain in the butt.

The child she took her anger out on was not one of the kids running around. She should be arrested and put away for a long time. A woman who can injure a tiny tot in a pram is not a stable person. Lock her up for a long time.

Crazy being the key word here. I was once attacked by an obviously unbalanced woman on the train who kicked me when I wasn't looking.

Hey, you stupid old cow! That's what children do!

While I agree the old hag should get punished for this horrible act. Children running around in a store shows the lack of basic parenting. A mother should tell her kids not to run in a store. I see it so often. The store is not a place for kids to run and bother other customers. It's the parent's responsibility.

I assume this crazy women must be childless.

Yeah I'm sure the baby in the stroller was really tearin' it up in the supermarket. What a psycho.

Sync, some children are actually well behaved in public, others are not. It reflects on the parents.

Yes I'm sure the mother didn't say anything at all to her children and just let them deliberately run around to annoy people. Good job on blaming the victims here.

Are you saying there aren't any self-entitled parents out there who think their kids can pretty much do whatever they want and couldn't care less what ppl think? Really?

Sorry, I am not up on the Queen 's English. I guess pram means stroller.

Kids running around the supermarket can be annoying, but pinching a child in the eye? FFS.

Hey, you stupid old cow! That's what children do! No doubt she's an old childless and bitter spinster with nothing better to do than go around picking on other people's kids. I'd lay money on this not being the first time she's assaulted other people's kids too. Lock this crazy old bat up before she really hurts somebody.

Yet another crime story about an old busybody who can't mind her own business. She deserves everything she gets.

I agree with most comments above. I'd only add that considering the 55 year old is obviously crazy, I wouldn't be surprised if the two older kids were not even running around all that much or at all.

Lock her up, and get her treated.

Perhaps fines for parents who can't control their kids and/or refuse to leave after being asked by staff, but definitely not assault...on a child.

For some reason most of elderly in this country turns into grumpy monsters. I do understand that with age your noise tolerance decreases but that's no reason to hurt a child.

What did the baby have to do with anything? The baby wasn't "running around". They were being children! I tell you......people these days.......smh

So what if the kids were running around the supermarket and being noisy! How can any of you defend the actions of this crazed old bat in any way? I'd like to see any one of these 'PC nannies' control three kids in a supermarket at 5:30pm (they are all hungry and tired) while you are pushing a pram. It is a public space and unless the kids are breaking the law they can do whatever they like. Furthermore, there is nothing in the article stating what these kids were doing. The might have only been asking for ice cream to have with dinner. You don't know! All you know is, some crazed old bat inflicted a serious injury on a one-year-old child in a pram and 'claims' the kids were being noisy!

I don't care what the baby was doing - what that 55-year-old did was harmful and wrong. It's child abuse, plain and simple. She needs jail.

Children act like children whether you tell them to behave or not, it makes me sad to see someone trying to justify such defiant act like this assault.

stop the victim blaming here, Kids are kids. You can ask them to be quiet now but after few minutes they can go on and play around again. Imagine taking care of 3 kids , shopping and thinking what to cook for dinner? Adults have to just adjust sometimes. If she doesn't want to see and hear kids playing around then better for her to not leave her house and she doesn't belong to this world. She should move to the woods.
