6 passengers injured after man sprays gas in Osaka subway

Six passengers suffered injuries after a man sprayed a substance resembling tear gas on them in a subway car in Osaka on Saturday night.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 10:20 p.m. in a train on the Midosuji line between Umeda and Yodoyabashi stations, Fuji TV reported. Police said the suspect, identified as Mitsutoshi Waki, 28, a cram school teacher, started spraying the gas in passengers' faces.

Six passengers suffered injuries and four of them were taken to hospital, police said.

Other commuters and station staff subdued Waki on the platform at Yodoyabashi station and handed him over to police.

Waki was quoted by police as saying he had some trouble with a male passenger sitting beside him, who was dozing off.

Hope there was sufficient payback during the "subduing" on the platform

Why? His suffering would give you retrospective pleasure?

Are you Ghandi in disguise here? My first thought was if I was one of the people "subduing" him I think I would have liked to take a shot or two extra myself.

Oh and what difference does it matter if he suffers a bit? Who knows he could have been committing a murder, he needs to be taught a lesson, and maybe a little vigilante justice was appropriate and not kid glove treatment, "Oh are you ok, you just tried to kill a bunch of people, but we'll be nice and treat YOU with respect".....Yeah right.

Yeah, mad at the dozing passenger and just so happened to have gas on him to spray innocent people. I'd hate to be this guy's student. Put him away!

@lucabrasi (btw strange handle to choose with views like you hold) People do things like this because they have no fear of the consequences. I wasn't saying kill him, but if some idiot gassed me on a train because he was upset with some other third person you can bet everything you have I'm going to let him have it.

Especially given the history of the sarin attack, he's lucky he got out alive if you ask me.

teargass? usually doesnt injure anyone unless, but i guess if they got hit hard in the eyes and inhaled, it's gotta suck pretty hard

And how is someone supposed to know at the time that it was teargas? Come on now, after the sarin gas attack by Aum it's pretty easy for anyone with memories of that incident to think that they would possibly die.

So, here's another one of these walking timebombs going off.

My guess would be it was some kind of mace spray. Something he probably bought online.

He so happened to carry a tear gas like substance just incase someone dozing off made him upset, real believable excuse,

This guy sounds more like a nut who has been planning this attack for a long while. Hope the Japanese treat this as a terrorist attack and nail this loon to the wall!

Why do these idiots like to do this? Why can't they use laughing gas or THC gas instead?

Obviously this is a problem that has brewing for quite a while. There's better ways to deal with this situation.

How dare you put your sleepy head on my shoulder, you are invading my space! Take this.

Fellow passengers did right thing. Now what will the justice system do ?

When someone dozes on me and thinks I am their pillow I give them a hard jab...like very hard.

@Yubaru

And how is someone supposed to know at the time that it was teargas?

Yes, I also guess some of the passengers caught themselves recalling the Tokyo subway sarin attack that happened about 20 years ago. If I was around on that subway I would feel panicked as I tend to read too much. Given that some of them were taken to hospital, the circumstances are seemingly similar to the deadly sarin attack on the Tokyo subway at that time. However, as the death toll seems to be zero so far, they're lucky it wasn't worse.

Correction for my comment:

... should be like :

If I was around on the Osaka subway this time around I would feel panicked as I tend to read too much.

Why just this morning some dude tried to doze off on my shoulder, which is an almost every day occurrence here. Like JapanGal, I use my elbow like a pool cue and that always does the trick. This guy carrying tear gas in case someone dozes off on his shoulder is taking it to a whole nother level. He needs to spend some time in the local cooler.
