Police in Kikuchi City, Kumamoto Prefecture, have arrested a 60-year-old man on suspicion of stealing a donation box placed in a shopping center to support the areas affected by the Noto Peninsula earthquake, along with a small desk it was on.

Police said Masashi Mukainakano, of no fixed address, is accused of stealing the donation box containing about 100,000 yen from an aisle of a shopping center, just before 10 a.m. on Tuesday, NTV reported.

According to the police, the donation box was fixed to the desk with screws so that it could not be easily picked up, but Mukainakano carried the desk away.

Police said Mukainakano, who was identified after an analysis of surveillance camera footage, has admitted to the charge and quoted him as saying, ”I wanted money for living expenses."

Those vaunted days of people getting their wallets they left on the train back, intact, are long over. This is the new norm in Japan, unfortunately.

Make an example of the old filth - a few years inside with back-breaking labour.

It is certainly not "the new norm".

An isolated incident or two proves nothing. There have ALWAYS existed dishonest and greedy people - and there always will be. Fortunately, most people remain honest.
