60-year-old man attempts to shoot acquaintance with harpoon gun

Police said Tuesday they have arrested a 60-year-old man in Kamisu, Ibaraki Prefecture, for allegedly attempting to kill a 38-year-old acquaintance with a harpoon gun.

According to police, the suspect, who has been named as Toshio Koshikawa, had been drinking alcohol at a barbecue he was holding at his house on Sunday night, when he allegedly fired a harpoon at one of his guests, Fuji TV reported. The meter-long projectile missed the man and no injuries were reported.

Police are investigating the circumstances that led up to the incident.

Alcohol and easy access to ANY kind of weapon is a bad combination.

Harpoon guns are silent but deadly.

OK, things are getting even stranger. I'm surprised you can own a spear gun in Japan without a permit. It's been a nutty summer.

I wonder who reported him - the guy who nearly got speared, or...?

I wonder if the older guy was showing off? as is often the case, an old fellow has a bit to drink, wants to prove he's as much of a man as he ever was and more of a man than that pipsqueak will ever be, what is he, 38? bet he can't do this- thwack !

Why did they have a harpoon gun at a barbeque?

Straight out of a Bond movie. The man's young acquaintance simply didn't get the point of the conversation. And, yes, why did they have a harpoon at a barbecue?!

This old fool is too dangerous for his own good, lock him up for good!
