60-year-old woman arrested for threatening to kill all students at Tokyo school

A 60-year-old woman was arrested on Thursday for allegedly threatening a primary school in Kunitachi City, Tokyo. According to police, Kazuko Okabe sent a threatening letter to the metropolitan police department (MPD) in which she said “I will kill every child at the school when the new semester starts."

After police received the letter on Sept 1 -- the first day of school after the summer break -- the school was temporarily closed as a safety precaution.

According to police, the letter had Okabe's address, but had a male name on the envelope. Police said that Okabe told them she had been having trouble with the school after a child crashed into her with his bike in July. She was quoted by police as saying that she had visited the school to complain, but the school had done nothing.

Wow, what a reasonable solution to your bike complaint problem...

That's a bit ambitious.

What an excellent example the senior citizens of this nation are setting to its youth. Why exactly is it that everyone thinks elderly people should be respected when there are deranged old bats like this running about?

Can't be helped. The old raised their young to run around without any real morals and the old cogs do not give a rats ***.

Because the other 99.9 percent are not deranged old bats? Oh, I get it! You are a perfectionist!

in which she said “I will kill every child at the school when the new semester starts-

At least she was polite enough to include everyone (it's bad manners to leave someone out you know).

Did anyone ask her how she would do this? with a knitting needle maybe?

The old people in Japan seem to be getting more and more loopy. Stabbings, slashings, attacks, threats. It seems to be a geriatric crime spree. I guess they have to stimulate their minds somehow.

Sounds like one of my crazy neighbors in the 'Hills.

I wonder if they kid on the bike knows what vengeance he hath unleashed.

"Well, this silver spree just goes to show that all these naysayers are wrong when they say the elderly in Japan have no get up and go. At least this is my informed judgment based on my one trip to Japan a few years ago."

Ahem

A wave of domestic terrorism perpetrated by senile delinquents.

What a wacky country Japan is turning out to be.

Subtext of her letter.

Dear Metopolitain Police. I am lonely and crave attention so I have decided to write a foolish letter so that people will realize that I exist. XOXO

I agree with the above poster about how they raise their children here. Respect for your elders, respect for your parents--ha! what a joke!! My cats have more respect for their elders than the kids here.

She was quoted by police as saying that she had visited the school to complain, but the school had done nothing.

And what exactly was the school spose to do nutbag? As Im sure the kid didn:t give her his name..

60 is not old.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

its just a child and an accident. What did she expect? the child should die and his classmates? what can the police do to her now to not make her feel more bitter and vengeful? that is the question.

what surprises me more is not the old lady getting crazy, sometimes all the kids on their bicycle, riding without looking what is around them... she may have been "hit" or scared several time by accident, and that kid was just the straw that broke the camel's back... no, what i find really crazy is that she put her address on the enveloppe !!!! is that what is said in the article !??!?!?

after Akihabara police do their best with all threat messages. i wonder how this nice lady was going to kill them all?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I understand that lady wanting someone to do something about some of these impolite kids running about, but threatening all of them because one hit me with a bike is a bit much. I have thought about hitting kids with my bike when they see me coming and continue to take up the whole walk way.

This was not the best way to handle the situation but I don't think she's batty. The old lady should have a cane and smack the kid if he/she doesn't apologize for hitting her. That's what my grandma would do.

She should make the kids respect their elders again and not involve the police.

I don't mind the kids so much, what gets me are the old guys/gals peddling down the road a high speed ringing their bells and expecting everyone to move out of the way. Quiet a few times I didn't move deliberately, they lost the argument afterwards too.

I live fairly close to a big station so we get tons of bicycles. Salary-men and OL trying to catch a train, lots of people concentrating more on their keitai than the road and don't even ask about a rainy day when the umbrellas come out and the speed picks up.

Seen one lady texting and steering while holding an umbrella.

To be honest I found students and mothers taking/fetching their kids to be better behaved than your average Salary-man/OL or pensioner.

As for getting kids to respect for that you need to be an authority figure, actually true for all situations. This don't mean being tough and using strong-arm tactics either. It all boils down to confidence and showing it.

make the kids respect their elders again and not involve the police.

How? Hit them with a cane? Don't be absurd! This old bat is just a loopy geriatric that is fed up with living in this society and is taking it out on anyone or, in this case everyone she can get the attention from. On the train the other night I saw an average looking 60 odd year old businessman sitting on the train watching some stupid variety show on his keitai and he was beaming people in the train with a laser pointer during commercials. Just a fruitcake! I see so many of these nutter 60+ fruitcakes it's scary!

Yes, 60 year old have hand grenades - so dangerous!

Really, 60 is not old.

My Dad is 64 and he goes to the basketball court every Sunday and plays full on street ball with guys half his age. I will admit there are some weird older people, but there are weird young people too. Like the 20 something business man that stopped me in the street today just to shake my hand and say Hi.

If some kid ran into my Dad on a bike and didn't apologize, I would expect my Dad to be angry about it. My Dad worked from 6 years old and some kid with an allowance hits him with a bike. Even I would be angry.

I say these people especially in Japan at 60, born right after a war. They deserve respect. When you're 60 and hopefully not loopy, and some kids bad mouths you or hits with a bike you'll understand.

You go girl. This womans got the right idea. The most schools are a buch of jack as_ es any way. The offspring of monster parents

Old people are fragile. They break when they fall down. Broken hips often don't heal properly and can lead to fatal complications. Consider living the rest of your life in pain or some other serious debilitation.

According to a Japan Times story, there have been something like 11,000 bicycle on pedestrian accidents since 2003. Not sure about total fatalities.

Technically it is illegal to ride on the sidewalk unless posted (jitensha oyobi hokosha senyo doro hyoshiki). It's not enforced because the police think riding in the street is even more dangerous.

I am frequently nervous when cyclists zoom by at high rates of speed. Sometimes they even nick my bag or hand. I can well imagine an elderly person being terrified/angry when out and about. That said, she is obviously a bit of a nutter.

The school could have had a safety lecture during the weekly assembly. I would consider it well within their purview.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I think the school should have the teachers give a short lecture to each of their classes about bike safety and respect/manners towards pedestrians. I think the only thing the lady could have done is go to the school and report it. At this point if I were an administrator at the school I would have assured her that this would be communicated to the kids. It sounds like they did nothing of the sort and made her feel like it was unimportant. Like car accidents, bikes can be just as dangerous.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

well she did include her full address so it's not like it was an anonymous threat

0 ( +0 / -0 )

20 or 60. Where do they grow these people?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

The way you guys are talking about 60 year olds being old I imagine you all must be averaging about age 15. Yes listen to yourselves, its pathetic.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

This woman should get in trouble for threatening to kill students. You don't threaten a whole school of kids for something one child did. Also, children aren't allowed to ride their bikes to and from school in the first place, how on earth did she even know which school this kid came from?
