Police in Komagane, Nagano Prefecture, have arrested a 62-year-old man for attempting to kill his 89-year-old father.

According to police, the suspect, Tsuneo Akahane, attempted to strangle his father while he was asleep at around 3 a.m. Monday, Fuji TV reported.

Akahane, who is retired, was caring for his bed-ridden father, neighbors said. He called 110 and said he had killed his father. Police rushed to the scene and found Akahane's father still breathing. He was taken to hospital where he is in a stable condition.

OK, this is just sad all the way around. Not just because of the crime itself, but because of its consequences.

So, now, an 89 year old father will be alive knowing (if he still has a mentally sound mind) his son tried to kill him because he was "a burden" or some such. And now he will be without his primary caregiver. And the retired son will likely pay some price for what he did in terms of prison. Unless somehow they decide for leniency based on the facts. Regardless, he can't undo what he did to his father even though his father lived.

A tragedy.

@ Viking - Very true. But he wouldn't know that ahead of time. People should be honest with themselves. If they get to a point where they are unable to care for somebody, they should do their research and find a good facility. Then make frequent visits to ensure their loved one is being cared for properly. I suspect this man was dependent on both pensions just to get by, and likely couldn't afford placement.

Glad he's okay. While I don't condone attempted murder as a means of dealing with stress, I can sympathize a bit. He did his share of work and earned his retirement. Instead of relaxing and enjoying it, he's still working. Maybe he couldn't afford to put him in a care facility.

I agree with you however, we have recently been reading about the "care" given at such facilities... It's really a vicious circle with much the same results - even if the son had put him in a so-called "care facility" and the same thing happened at a "care giver's hands" the son might still feel guilty for having put him in there...

"Akahane, who is retired, was caring for his bed-ridden father"

Apologies for cutting and pasting my comment from TWO DAYS AGO... but here we go again... :-(

"Japan is known all over the world for the respect it shows to it's elderly citizens, but maybe we should all tell the truth... that Japan is 'worn out from caring for the elderly residents'"

The son was overwhelmed I can see more of this happening as the people in Japan continues to age and the children leave home and leave their parents to fend for themselves because they are too busy with their own lives.

There HAS to be a way to address this caregiver issue. Why not have the government pay people who look after their parents a small allowance? That might go a long way towards fixing situations like this. Maybe not all, but certainly most.
