A 62-year-old man turned himself in at a police station after robbing a post office in Hiratsuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, police said Wednesday.

According to police, Masaichi Tada entered the post office at around 1:20 p.m. Tuesday and threatened a customer with a knife, while demanding that an employee hand him money, Sankei Shimbun reported. After being given 40,000 yen, Tada left the post office.

At 2:50 p.m., Tada showed up at a police station and said he had robbed a post office.

Police said Tada, who has no fixed address or employment, told them he left the knife in a plastic bag outside a nearby convenience store where it was later found.

Presumably he is hoping for a free comfy bed and hot meals while incarcerated.

He’s looking for a bed and three squares for the winter.

That's exactly it. The winter is upon us. He just needs shelter and a meal. Will be out by the spring or summer and repeat the cycle next winter.

What a crappy situation.

Too bad the silver spoon suits at the Diet can't think to put more money into infrastructure and financing for groups and facilities to support these poor souls that commit petty crimes to get off the streets.

Every year the same stories appear just before winter . . . .

Three hots and a cot .....

This situation is really sad when a person has to commit a crime just to have shelter during the cold months. This is the kind of issues that I would much rather see the government put effort into vs cherry blossom festivals or using state funds for the Imperial palace when they have their source of income. I'm not saying the Imperial Royal family is not significant to Japan by any means as it really is important and a strong symbol of rich tradition not seen today in other cultures because it is lost. However funding should be more carefully looked at.

Exactly JonathanJo, three hot meals and a roof over his head.

Its getting cold and people need a free warm place to they where they can get free meals too. Well.....maybe not a warm place.

The motive is pretty clear had the article provided more details about his current situation, i.e. homeless, unemployed etc. Seriously aside this what person goes into a Post Office with a knife only to hide the money so no one else can find it, then turn themselves in with the nearest police station and tell them exactly where the money is. hmmm. If I was the police, just send him to a local shelter.

No background info in the article, but it seems safe to assume he was looking for food and accommodation for the approaching winter. Beats sleeping in a cardboard box, for sure.

I guess his conscious got the best of him after robbing the post office. Yet as stated by others this could be a scam for shelter & meals during the winter months.

Prison again? Too easy for people like this. Ship them off to military boot camp. Have them dig trenches, put them on KP duty, and do the grunt rookie stuff to teach them some discipline. Possibly some working skills as well.

Homeless, unemployed, no money for food and the cold is biting. Check his records. I bet you will notice he has been to jail on a petty crime before. He just needs a bed, meals, warm place and company to pass the gloomy days of Winter.
