Police in Oshu, Iwate Prefecture, have arrested a 64-year-old man on suspicion of killing his 55-year-old wife after he drove a car with her in it off a mountain road in an attempt to kill himself along with her.
According to police, the incident occurred sometime between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. on July 9. Local media reported that Minenori Kaneko, from Niigata Prefecture, drove his car off the road down an embankment, injuring both Kaneko and his wife, Miki.
Kaneko and his wife were taken to hospital where she died due to severe injuries. Kaneko was also injured and police waited until he recovered this week before questioning him.
He was quoted by police as saying his wife had consented to their both dying.

Are you suggesting Japan is not a safer country than many other highly industrialized nations based on the reporting of a dual suicide attempt? This would not even had made the front pages of most local papers in virtually ANY city of most industrialized nations on any given day.
Is there crime and danger in Japan? Yes, of course there is.
Please name a single other major country on earth that does not have the same, and many times over..........
I've been living in Japan for over 40 years. I've traveled to many other nations in that time and before. In my opinion, relatively speaking Japan is still safer than many others.

I agree with the charges. There are less painful ways of going if they agreed to end their lives together.

Didn't say that. But reading the news regularly it seems that walking the streets alone is quite safe, I know from experience. Going home to family is quite the opposite however...
On that subject I should check where the wife is :-)
