Police in Minoh, Osaka Prefecture, have arrested a 66-year-old man on suspicion of dangerous driving resulting in injury and leaving the scene of an accident after his vehicle hit a pedestrian.
According to police, Takeo Ogawa, who is self-employed, has also been charged with driving without a license, Sankei Shimbun reported. Ogawa was driving a minitruck at around 8:10 p.m. on Saturday when he hit a 76-year-old man on a crossing at an intersection with no traffic lights.
Ogawa kept going and didn’t report the incident to police. The victim reportedly suffered a severe facial fracture.
Ogawa was arrested Sunday after police identified his vehicle through an analysis of street surveillance camera footage. Police quoted him as saying, “I fled because I thought it would be discovered that I was driving without a license.”
Police said Ogawa had his driver’s license revoked due to past violations several years ago. At the time of the accident, he was returning home after doing some shopping.

People who drive without licenses must be doubly careful if they want to evade the law.
Hopefully the victim can recover damages from the driver as well as the owner of the vehicle that hit him.

Also, did he think he would actually get away with hitting someone with his car? There are surveillance cameras everywhere.

They could toss him in jail or try to do something productive with him. He might be a real problem so there nothing you can do with him. But I would love to have him plead on his own behalf and say I can do XYZ to the betterment of the community. "Please give me this chance." If he has no inclination to attempt this, then yes, be harsh.

This person should be made an example, losing his license for several violations was bad enough, but to keep driving the same and even causing accidents show a complete lack of consideration for the safety of others.

No sympathy for the driver here at all. What a selfish, inconsiderate person to leave someone suffering in pain at the side of the road because he wasn’t man enough to stop and admit guilt. Hope the victim can make a full recovery and get some serious compensation from the coward driver.

Another ancient driver runs someone over, when will this stop? Police should randomly pull over old people and check them for driving ability, not to mention if they have a license. This carnage the roads at the hands of the ancient in Japan has to stop. It is so easy to spot the incompetent driver out there on the road and nearly all of them, other than the BMW drivers, are old like this criminal.

It seems as if hit and run cases are becoming more common everywhere.
Maybe it is time to add some hi tech sensor that detects such an incident and renders the vehicle inoperative for an appropriate period of time.
