69-year-old man arrested for calling police station 3,900 times in Shiga Prefecture

Police in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, have arrested a 69-year-old man on suspicion of fraudulent obstruction of business after he repeatedly called a police station about 3,900 times.

According to police, Shigeki Tashima made the calls between October 18, 2022 and February 8, Kyodo News reported. None of the calls were emergencies, requests for help or anything related to crime.

Police said Tashima would call the station day and night, talking incoherently for as long as 20 minutes.

Tashima was previously arrested last March for obstructing police business after making about 36,000 calls to Otsu Police Station over 19 months.

Why did they let him talk incoherently for 20 minutes in the first place? Surely someone would’ve realized that it’s Tashima san again and he’s been on the Ozeki One-cup sake. Sounds like a very lonely old man.

Don't get me wrong but after just 10 or 20 times calling in for no reason the Police should Block the guys number and notify the Telephone company he uses of the situation. He lost his right for Police support by phone the minute he started maliciously recalling them constantly. This should never have gone on as long as it did. This is typical Japan... if there is no law on the books it takes far too long to make a change to stop something. I love Japan and respect the Japanese Police but sometimes they need to make a judgement call and act more quickly... take some responsibility.

find him a job with a coldcall centre LOL

Speed Dial?

police was very patient not arresting him after 10 calls. Perhaps he was trying stalking a female officer at the station? Dementia could also be a factor.

What eve happened to caller ID and blocking???

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Right! And nobody in their wisdom thinks he might need an assessment for say dementia because his short term memory has gone, and actually forgets he called the police hundreds of times. Before I jump down the punish him. Poor communication by the police in this matter and poor reporting by JT.

Why not let him try to beat his record ? Ludicrous as some explained to reach such numbers. Above 3 malicious calls, you should be liable for obstruction. Some people may die or be hurt.

Too much free time..

Time waster. Need to be punished and understand why his actions are not normal.

What a sad head-case.

Imagine wasting away the twilight years of your life doing this. Could be travelling, gardening, painting, playing gate-ball...but no, spending thousands of hours making nuisance calls. Pathetic.

I think the police showed angelic patience here, LOL

So...they arrest him? Twice? For what's obviously a mental issue, most likely Alzheimer's or some other form of dementia. Gosh, such a compassionate solution from the Shiga Prefectural police. (_

He was boring and he wants to talk someone. So, he found it. His victim was the Police. Now he will have some buddies to talk and free Bento in the jail.

The reason could possibly be the poor phone line connection that automatically made those calls, I hope he has a good lawyer.

I used to visit an old woman in her 90's and she had a habit of calling the church pastor in the middle of the night. We just had to walk with her in her final steps in life. The old man in the story has dementia and obviously lives alone. He needs company. He needs social service. Those who cannot see this social issue should be jailed in insolation.

Quite right old top. A lot of the queer behaviour exhibited by seniors is due to mental health issues due to their age. It’s very sad and these people certainly need more help.

Are the police a business? Isn't the purpose of a business to make money?
