Police in Ebina, Kanagawa Prefecture, said Tuesday they have arrested a 69-year-old man on suspicion of killing his 86-year-old wife who suffered from dementia.

According to police, Toshio Uzue has admitted to killing his wife Sachio at around 4:30 p.m. on May 30 by stabbing her in the neck and then hitting her head with a frypan. After killing his wife, Uzue stabbed himself in the neck several times.

Sachie’s caregiver found the couple when she arrived a short time later and called 119.

Police waited until after Uzue had recovered before arresting him on Monday. Uzue was quoted by police as saying he felt distressed to see his wife suffering from dementia and that he wanted to die together with her.

In addition to suffering from dementia, Sachie had a leg disability which made it painful for her to walk.

Till death do us part ....

It was just the other week the japanese government were making claims about addressing the dementia epidemic. This kind of incident is the real tragedy of dementia and it happens very often.

That's still no excuse to kill her. This is sad fodder for those 'die-with-dignity' TV movies in America. Tearjerker for sure, but still unjustified.

It certainly is. But true love and devotion means you stick it out together. When Ronald Reagan had Alzheimer's, Nancy stood by him until the end - even as the 'old age' disorder destroyed him gradually. His autobiography shows that - he could remember his youth but not his recent past. It's sad.

But you don't dust your mate off when it happens.

I don't see how anyone could sympathize with such a cold blooded act. He stabbed her in the neck and then repeatedly hit her in the head with a fry pan. Many many couples around the world deal with dementia without butchering each other.

He murdered her and deserves no sympathy. Maybe, just maybe, I can see if he overdosed her so she died peacefully in her sleep. But not this.

No reason to her his own wife.

I know it can and is hard but you need to stick together through good and bad times

Marriage is supposed to be 'in sickness and in health' in most religions. But even outside of that, a marriage is like a yin-yang, 2 equal opposites complementing each other in a circle forever so to speak. Killing your sick mate is just plain murder, no matter how you slice it. Enjoy the rest of your days in the can, fella. That was mean, cold blooded and at best stupid.

With the aging population, financial burden, lack of personal connection, and a lot suicide-murder cases among elderly couples...legalizing euthenasia is the better option. There's also a large number of elderly and terminally ill people in this country that are in coma and just waiting to die. Legalizing euthanasia will give people an option if they don't want to be a burden or if the family members need to move on. I am not saying it is the only and best option, but it is good to have an option other than suicide and murder.
