7 injured in Saitama Aeon mall after woman pepper sprays them

Police in Hanyu, Saitama Prefecture, are looking for a woman who pepper sprayed shoppers at an Aeon mall on Sunday.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 7:20 p.m. at Aeon Mall Hanyu. The suspect quickly sprayed a woman in her 30s near a self-service register in the mall’s food section, Kyodo News. She then apparently started spraying other people, including two children, at random.

Police said seven men and women were rushed to the hospital after complaining of eye and throat pain. All of the victims were treated for minor injuries.

The woman managed to flee the scene. According to Hanyu Police Station, the woman is believed to be in her 20s to 30s and about 165 centimeters tall. Police are examining mall surveillance camera footage to try and identify her.

Waddo, try going shopping with bear spray hanging from your holster the in Japan police or security would be onto in a flash. Police have powers in Japan to arrest you on suspicion e.g you might pass a drink driving breath test. But they can still arrest you on suspicion of being effected by illegal drugs or a faulty test. And there is nothing you can do about it. They will lock you up hassle your boss and family for up to a month. 99% of people will sign a confession for misdemeanor guilty or not. If you hiking through a known bear area the police will not get involved because it evident why. There are laws and there is illegal in Japan.

So COVID masks are ineffective against mace/bear spray.......? Good to know, although getting a shot of this stuff in the eyes is not a pleasant experience either. Yes, first hand experience, and No, I did not try on myself....;-(. It is mandatory training for military security forces who are armed with these agents to understand the impact they have on potential "targets". As is true with many of the non-lethal tools used to control violent/threatening suspects.

Someone seemed surprised that "pepper spray" could cause one to require hospitalization. Two possible reasons: 1) this is Japan and it is not unusual for first responders to transport victims to a hospital for even the slightest injury, and 2) anyone with preexisting respiratory problems would likely find breathing extremely difficult if they inhaled a dose of whatever this was.

As bear spray (much stronger) is not illegal in Japan and can be purchased from any good outdoor shop, I doubt that pepper spray is.

Blame it of COVD or any thing in between, some lunatics will do anything to either get attention or satisfy their ego.

It’s not, because now also the possibility rises that it’s a man dressed in women’s clothes.

I thought we didn't have genders anymore or could just chose on the spur of the moment.

Life used to be much simpler in the old days.

I used it on myself once, it wasn’t much fun. Didn’t know you can buy it here though. Or she made her own ?

Average height of 158cm here for the ladies. So this very helpful information.

Well that narrows it down a bit huh.

Was it at random? Or apparently at random? Because pepper spray can be effective non-lethal deterrence from those exuding aggression.

I've been in this mall once or twice. This northern area of Saitama seems to have a lot of crazies.
