Never watched a kid making a scene while the helpless mother just waits, exhausted, embarassed? I have, countless times, and that's called lack of a father's presence. Japanese men spend half of their lives in the office + the fact japanese women aren't that strong or don't have the guts to grab and bring a kid home by the arm. (japanese are obsessed about what the others might think about them) Ever heard the expression "a slap on the wrist"? It doesn't kill anyone but it educates. I'm not even sure if our palms really hurted, it was more about the reprehension, my father's angry look that made us cry. And no, no one in my family even drinks, and we are strongly against violence, so your example is invalid. Failing to educate your kids is one of the most harmful things you can do to the society. Crying abuse for people who educate their kids doesn't help much either. In my home country a teacher was dismissed from a school for trying to make the kids sweep their own classroom. Same thing. Countless times I saw an ugly adult behaving just like a spoiled brat, very clear traits of lack of some of the most basic education at home. In worse cases, some fathers "tame" their kids to be aggressive, self-absorbed and to always be on top of everyone else, the recipe for a perfect bully, who enjoys hiting quiet, well-educated kids. Please don't do this to your kids, to us.

Some parents have to work lots, in order to support their families, and are not able to put as much time into parenting as would be ideal. Hardly scum parents, just disadvantaged.

I can7t believe the amount of harsh criticism for these teens and their parents. This is simply just teens being teens. In the states, we would go "toilet papering" not because we were raised poorly, but because that is what teens did. If this is the kind of trouble teens cause, I'm all for it! better than the gun violence, drug abuse, and date rape the is all too common in the states. Give them some community service and let them live the rest of their lives. If you never did a stupid thing as a teen, you missed out!

Let them do a few weeks as aids in convalescent homes. With no wifi.

Bit harsh perhaps. We are talking about what was essentially a tasteless yet harmless prank. Peer pressure, some alcohol perhaps, most teens ('good and bad') could have take part in such prank.

There are many gray areas of parenting and sometimes it is difficult to differentiate bad parenting from good. Is a slap on the wrist/palm the same as spanking? I think that depends on the force and frequency. And whether the punishment was explained or not. Sometimes good kids do bad things as well. We all have tough lives and judgement is difficult without prolonged evidence.

A false emergency call to the police then ambushing the police car and pelting it with food. This is a "harmless prank"??

So, you advocate corporal punishment. That's just bad parenting. Using your anecdote, your father could have come home drunk, demanded your palms, and you would have started crying wondering what you did wrong. Doesn't mean you did a thing, nor does it mean he would be right -- but you would think he was until you grew up, likely scarred by the abuse.

Saying it's the parents is just plain stupid. Yes, there are bad parents, such as those that beat their kids like you mentioned, but there is no proof the parents of these kids are bad, only proof that these kids are stupid. You've never heard of peer pressure? No doubt some, if not at all, of these kids are being raised well, but they thought it would be fun to do what they did, and there would be little consequences.

How do you presume they are not? It's a safer bet -- and my point is that it IS a bet -- that at least SOME of the kids' parents are doing a fine job than it is to just suddenly blame all the parents for what these kids did.

Ever hear of a metaphor? Even if it comes from old traditions and you take it literally, which you're not meant to. Ever hear of the expression, "rule of thumb"? Well, you DID just say a father's job is A, and mother's B, so we know you buy into gender stereotypes already.

That does not mean he was right. He could have been wrong and you would still cry. Abuse is not the answer, nor does it imply "education" or "positive child rearing".

Agree on that 100%, but not what you call an "education". Educate them on right and wrong, absolutely, but not backed by threats and physical abuse.

Well, I'd certainly never beat them, nor threaten to, sorry. That is not education; it's negative reinforcement of personal opinion. Hell, I bet that IF these kids are the way they are because of their parents then it is because of abuse and bullying, much like a dad always punishing them, right or wrong, they feel the need to lash out physically on society and have learned it is okay to do so. So, backfire for you.
