70-year-old man, arrested for hit-and-run, had no license for past 30 years

A 70-year-old man who was arrested in Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, on Sunday, over a hit-and-run incident has been driving without a license for the past 30 years, police said Monday.

According to police, Sadao Nonaka hit an 85-year-old woman riding a bicycle at an intersection last Saturday afternoon, and kept going, Sankei Shimbun reported. The woman sustained serious injuries, including a fractured wrist and collarbone. Another driver witnessed the hit-and-run and jotted down the license plate number of the car, which led police to Nonaka.

Police said Nonaka has admitted to hitting the woman and quoted him as saying he fled the scene because he was afraid the authorities would find out he had been driving without a license for about 30 years.

so repeated testing and seizing their licenses won't do a damn bit of good will it

sensei has a point. Just how many of these elderly drivers are driving without a license? The other thing I want to know is who either gave him or sold him the car.

"he fled the scene because he was afraid the authorities would find out he had been driving without a license for about 30 years...". And they did.

This kind of incident with older drivers who have not had a licence for decades occur pretty often. It does not bode well for the police though. If these jokers can get away with driving without a licence for decades, it's pretty obvious the traffic policing is not strict enough. The only reason this loser got caught is because of an accident.

THIS MORNING an old tiny little old man, barely above the steering seat pulled out in front of me at a last split second notice. I swerved out of the way, almost hit a curb and drove a bit over the yellow line. He just kept going like nothing happened. I had to stop my car in the middle of the road to collect my thoughts. I pulled up next to him and looked at him. I kid you not, he looked at least over 90 and cannot see the road properly. I laughed because he reminded me of Mr. Magoo. But this is just an example of the dangers these elderly people cause.
