Police in Iida, Nagano Prefecture, on Monday arrested a 71-year-old man on suspicion of slashing four family members at their home.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 8 a.m. TV Asahi reported that the suspect, identified as Osamu Motojima, lives in the house with his 69-year-old wife, their son, his 37-year-old wife and their two daughters aged 3 years and 7 months.

Police said they received a call from Motojima's wife reporting the attack. Police rushed to the scene and found Motojima's wife, his daughter-in-law and two granddaughters bleeding from knife wounds to their arms, hands and fingers.

The four were taken to hospital, but their injuries are not life-threatening, police said.

Police said Motojima has admitted to the crime but has so far given no motive.

I just hope the "mental wounds" will also heal. That must have been a terrifying experience for those attacked by the patriarch of their own family...

Their injuries are not life-threatening, should be Ok physically.

Who knows? Could be this heat. It can drive anyone nuts.

I just hope the poor little girls - and other victims - will pull through. Whatever the reason this old man went on a knife rampage, he needs to be locked away forever - be that in a solitary pych-ward, or the Big House. Sane or not his behavior is deadly.

@kaimycahl:

Hmm So, let´s see, he would have been either 1 or 2 at the end of WW2、Japan has been at peace since then. So, there is no chance he suffered a relapse.

But who knows, perhaps he suffers from PTSD after being attacked by a tiger.

Sad he attacked his own family I wonder if he was in the military in the past and suffered some kind of relapse of some kind?

And just a few days ago you had a go at ME for making assumptions??

Not all, but most Japanese families do not really like each other very much. They are distant from each other and do not talk to each other about what is really on their minds. I've been here for 15 year now. I have seen it. Heard it. And been involved with it.

What kind of motive could anyone have for slashing a 3 month old baby? Let's just say he is crazy and leave it at that.

Kitchen knife, apparently. Maybe wants to spend some time in prison...

Too many people in one possibly small house. Tensions rise in the summer heat and the old man goes berserk.

Alzheimer's maybe?

At that age probably he had 2 liter of Sake that morning before breakfast ...

Sad he attacked his own family I wonder if he was in the military in the past and suffered some kind of relapse of some kind? Even though Motojima admitted to the crime he should be committed locked up for treatment!
