the daughter became ill about 20 years ago.

One can’t help but wonder if that was the father's doing

The stressed-out human animal can often turn dangerous, resulting in violence turned inwards (suicide) or outwards (homicide). This is a tragic outcome for a family that must have suffered much.

At least he killed himself as well.

Why not just buy some life insurance and kill himself first.

something needs to change at the individual level among Japanese. I think, people should learn to speak it out and debate about issues constructively at home and all other aspects of life. Defending the Wa and not being a bother has its place, but people need to speak up.

What use would life insurance do if he kills himself?

The 73-year-old man had probably been paying over twenty years for his daughter's hospital stay...

Why did the man not leave his wife and daughter on earth and just leave earth alone?

I wonder if he could have applied for a 限度額適用認定証 ?

I would hate to see hospitals turn into maximum security prisons. Bag searches and metal detector would be just horrific.

And add to the expenses of medical care

Death is the answer for the ones who is too afraid and/or has given up. If there was something or someone who could give them support, an option, a respite of sorts or even a glimpse of hope, maybe things would have turned out differently.

Sad. It must be very difficult looking after your sick daughter for 20 years even while you had your wife together with you and now with her also sick and hospitalized...

At their advanced ages, I think the man just lost hope of being able to look after them on his own so he decided to leave this mortal realm together at least. Very sad.

I agree with this. Those who suggest that he just take his own life seem not to understand the concept that if he just took his own life he would be leaving the burden of their future care entirely to the state. He may have just been tired of taking care of them as his age advanced. Up to the time of his wife's hospitalization, it is probable that she shared the responsibilities of taking care of their daughter. Now, with her hospitalization he was left with taking care of both. Perhaps he was anticipating a life where he would also succumb to hospitalization and there would be no one to take care of any of them. Rather than become that meiwaku, he solved the societal problem for the three of them.

It's a problem of education and understanding. Look, life is extremely rare, an unique anomaly or form of existence in universe. Most space is filled with nothing or a few stars and stone or gas planets only. We should really understand that and stop to kill own life or that of others, followed by that of other lower level life forms like animals, plants, insects etc. Of course that's not always possible, because we have to kill some for food or when attacked by them , as wildlife, bacteria etc also want to survive concurrently. So, do whatever you think is needed, but killing others in wars or like here in peace but crime situations or killing oneself by suicide is always the worst thing ever. Kill a mosquito or fly, throw a stone into river or a kitchen plate down to ground if you are mentally unstable and think you have to come up with violence, but stop killing people in war and murder attacks. We are very special out there and should therefore act corresponding and with responsibility. Isn't that really easy to comprehend?

Hospitals like this have patients that have suffered strokes and many of them are in a vegetative state, and some, literally for decades.

Pulling the proverbial plug is extremely hard to do here, and legally, as long as the heart is beating, the person is considered to be "alive", even though they may be brain dead.

The daughter evidently had a stroke, not fell "ill", and having to take care of both his wife and daughter had to have been hell for him.

I personally know a wife, who took care of her husband daily, for over 30 years, as he had a stroke, when he was in his late 30's. It literally tore her family apart, as her husband was brain dead, and all shriveled up, being fed through a tube in his nose. But they couldnt "pull" the plug. It was beyond painful for everyone to see, every day.

Thankfully he passed away before his 70th birthday.

This is eldercide and these continuing and escalating deaths, suicides , family murders is proof and it needs government intervention immediately. In other western societies a Royal Commission or a Senate inquiry would be demanded by the public 5 years ago when I first noticed the abnormal elderly deaths and suicides involving families both murder/suicide or murder. This is out of hand and needs Government urgency.

Why not just buy some life insurance and kill himself first.

this was stopped decades ago to stop people killing the selves over money debt. We will never know what conversations took place but I know personally of brothers or sisters, husbands and wives begging to be killed due to their neurological conditions. I’m not going to judge, but can understand.

So The next time someone tells us we are all living longer longer, it doesn’t mean we are all living healthy. Some of us will live with diseases we never had 100 years ago or were very rare.

you bring up a good point but some neurological disorders aren’t just a stroke. Sadly most people think strokes only happen in the elderly.I’ve seen kids and teenagers have a stroke. Most can recover if the get fast rehabilitation and treatment. As you said some will have devastating strokes.

Interesting that Japan has Suzuki Swift police cars.

Swift is a hatchback, and something more muscular would be more appropriate for a cop car.

How do you know the daughter had a stroke?

@Sven Asai Evidently not, by looking at the number of negatives and counting you received. Life is a vicious cycle there is always a beginning and a end. No matter how much education you have, or how much you try to understand it. You can't defeat the end!!! So no, it is not easy to to comprehend!!! Everything happens for a reason and some reasons we as people just don't understand!
