Two 17-year-old high school students were arrested on Friday night over a hit-and-run incident that left a 73-year-old woman in a coma in Niiza, Saitama Prefecture.

According to police, the woman was on a crossing at around 7:45 a.m. Friday when she was hit by a black scooter that kept going, Fuji TV reported.

A witness called police and the woman was rushed to hospital where she remained in a coma late Friday.

Police said the two boys admitted hitting the woman and said they panicked and kept going.

You're 17, why run? Nothing will happen to you, but your parents will be paying for a long time. Let's hope the victim recovers.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you have to be 20 in order to drive/ride a motor vehicle? I sure hope the woman recovers completely and can be with her family soon.

@holyholly

You can get a license for a 50cc scooter at 16 in Japan. The licensing process is fairly quick, straightforward and inexpensive. Any vehicle beyond that is a different story.

Lay the blame for this accident firmly at the foot of the police who do nothing to stop these idiots and their crazy driving.

Those gang should pay all the cost for treating that poor women until she recover completely ...

You can get a license for a 50cc scooter at 16 but that is single rider only. The boys were probably riding 2 up illegally on the 50cc so panicked.

Yes they were screwing around.... many of us did at their age. To me the punishment should be dealt in relation to their overall demeanor and citizenship up until the point of this event. If the driver had a history of recklessness then he needs some very stern medicine. However if he had never had a problem and was quite remorseful... then teach him a lesson somehow but do not ruin his whole future. Kids will be kids and things will unfortunately happen sometimes.

Now the young two boys and their families have ended up having to pay dearly for the 73-yr-old woman for years.

Hope she will recover from her coma in some way.

The worse that'll probably happen to these kids is that they'll have their license revoked (assuming that they have one) and won't be able to get it back for a while.

We don't know yet if they were yankees revving their engine or high schoolers on their way to school. 7:45am is not a yankee time to do things.

Police said the two boys admitted hitting the woman and said they panicked and kept going.

I think this must be true, but never the less they should pass before a judge and be sentenced. Of course, it wouldn't be no use to put them in prison, but let them work with the emergency services for some times (2 or 3 months), I think they would learn their lesson.

The financial aspect is something different, I will not comment on that.

I truly hope and wish the lady will get out of her coma and will recover from it without any sequels.

We don't know yet if they were yankees revving their engine.....

I'm not suggesting that they are, they are probably just typical riders of those big scooters, usually with open exhausts and ridden by arrogant idiots while the police just watch.
