Police in Kyoto have arrested a 49-year-old unemployed man on suspicion of killing his 77-year-old father.

According to police, Takayoshi Tsutsumi has admitted to stabbing his father Ko at their municipal apartment in Nishikyo Ward at around 1 p.m. Saturday, Sankei Shimbun reported. A resident in the nextdoor apartment called 110 and said there had been a stabbing.

Police rushed to the apartment building and found the victim unconscious from a knife wound. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Tsutsumi was arrested at the scene of the crime and a blood-stained knife was found.

Police said that last November, other family members had notified police that they thought Tsutsumi had been acting violently toward his father. Tsutsumi was given a warning by police.

Tsutsumi was given a warning by police.

Well that obviously worked really well!

Just curious, why did the writer consider the fact he's unemployed be the most important information besides his age? Is it relevant at all?

Certainly the family is remorseful and regretful this ingrate was left alone with the father. Desperate time for many Japanese families.

49, unemployed, and living at with his parents. Literally killed the man who was feeding him and keeping a roof over his head.

This is only the tip of what will be, as Japan ages and the number of unemployed men and women be replaced by technology these types of incidents will occur more often. You have a culture that is based on working pride. Most often when you read an article the article mentions whether or not the person was employed and their age. To not work is thought of not worth living. As you can see in the number of suicides caused by not having work or having too much work.

Here we go again! Is it only my imagination or does it seem that the number of murders by family members is unusually high in Japan?

I understand that people can fall on hard times and need to live with their parents but if you're over 30, you really shouldn't be living with parents for too long.

I think in Japan, they call this social issue the "8050 problem".

Why was the father and son together even after the son was violent to the father and after the police gave a warning to the son to never be violent to anyone or you may go to jail?

definitely would like more details on the father and son relationship and what triggered the son to act violently... also, i hope Japan can be more accepting towards the unemployed - its like the end of the world here when they are jobless to the point people become traumatized and do crazy things!

Unemployed middle aged men is common these days in Japan and many developed countries or maybe he is single or divorced! These men were the most frustrated and bad tempered one! Their fate is sealed, the society shall never gives them a chance to start again!

A slightly conflict between the father and son or brothers will made a violence crime because they were seen as loser and depised by women!

Japanese family violence is out of hand.

I would suggest lock all knives in a compartment when family members are around.

Rest In Peace” poor, unfortunate old soul. “Condolences” to the remaining family members mentioned in the article.

Wonder if the NPA s keeping statistics on the possible increase lately of intra-family violence? Is it socio-economic? - It cant be due to the pandemic. Those numbers appear to are going down.

I'm going to assume that the reason why the suspect was unemployed was because of his violent temper or perhaps some other mental illness. What we don't know, is what role did the suspect's father play in his mental condition. Had the man been tormented or abused by his father for many years?

Not trying to say that violence is justified, but this type of violence towards parents doesn't seem to happen as much in countries where parents give unconditional love or at least 'tough love' and they don't let their kids live at home all their lives.

Not an isolated incident, as some may try to explain away. Especially, if police were called out before.

You sound like you either don't live in Japan, are relatively new to the country, or have never read Japanese media before. It is very common for local media outlets to report whether a suspect is employed or unemployed. These English articles often translate the Japanese articles directly, including the part about employment.
