79-year-old man strangled by wife after argument

A 68-year-old woman was arrested on Sunday accused of strangling her husband with a towel in their home in Hakodate City. Harumi Shibuya, a 68-year-old resident of the town of Hiyoshi, is suspected of killing her husband at around 4 a.m. Sunday. She told police her husband had been drinking the night before, and he went to bed but got up again later complaining about the noise, grabbed her and became abusive.

Shibuya told police her husband often became abusive when drinking, and that she could no longer continue living the way they did. She admitted to killing her husband and said she also intended to kill herself, police said.

Sounds like many years of only-when-he-drinks abuse took their toll.

What we had here was a failure to communicate.

I think she meant to say "he" could not longer continue living the way they did. But Japanese often get "he" and "she" confused.

What does it take to subdue a 79 year old drunk guy? I think a little pepper spray would have worked.

When pushing the old guy in the stairs will much more easier.

Age difference. She's 11 years younger.

Granny power! Pretty tough old bird this one. Ummm, do you think there is a problem with alcohol abuse in Japan?

This woman possibly suffered years of abuse, she simply had enough

This is what booze will do to you if you are hooked on it. Such issue is well known 'La Merde' around the world. There is no solution for it and is the same as 'Drugs Phobia.' This elderly lady should instead pack herself and run away, perhaps to her own married children if she has any. If she was abused in such circumstances before she should report the matter to some sort of alcohol prevention centre.

Call me nasty, but at her age most of the things she will want to do in life are complete. I sort of think she must have some sense of relief.

Well done her, just a shame she got caught. I agree, an accident with the stairs would have been a better idea.

Suspened sentence and she on the town again

She will walk free. It is Japan, unless there is a new and huge Life Insurance policy.

She'll get a suspended sentence no matter what, with her age and the sympathy factor she introduced by claiming abuse. Doesn't matter if it's premeditated or not. A Japanese judge would never put her away.

Ah, the danger of marrying younger women.

Well she was younger maybe a very robust 68? Just goes to show you hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.

Well done!? What is going on with you people?

She just murdered her own husband, and so far the only thing we have to indicate that he did anything to deserve it is her word -- the word of a killer, I might add. "I've been abused for years... I intended to kill myself right afterward..." Well, why didn't you? It's easy to make up lies like this when the victim is no longer alive to defend himself.

Shame on all of you for cheering on a cold-blooded killer. There's nothing to cheer or joke about here.
