Before everyone jumps to conclusions, I'd like to read the full investigation.

So, between now an then...

Just to give you an alternative scenario to think about

imagine an 18yr old, who's gotten into a bad crowd, and are after him. He's living in fear for them catching up with him and "doing him in". So when this unfortunate delivery person comes a-knocking, the 18 year old's instinct of attacking springs forth and attacks him.... purely out of a psychologically induced self-defense created by those who were harassing him.

Have a slow, well thought think about that, picture yourself in an environment of chaos, such as a High drug ridden rise Estate, then ... make your judgement.

We don't have the facts at present, so perhaps, stop being so arm-chair judge-mental for now.

"I wanted to watch someone die! I've been practicing on stray cats, so I wanted to upgrade!"

It usually goes in this pattern!

I've been unable to determine what that age refers to - is it the age to be tried as an adult by the penal code? Or the age where someone is considered an adult for sex? Or is it in reference to being able to buy cigarettes and alcohol? Or is it the age when they celebrate coming of age day? There are various classifications of when leaves youthhood, I'm unclear if this new age of majority is in reference to the penal code. It does seem strange that 18 year olds would be charged as youth, if it were in reference to the penal code.

Outside of alcohol and cigarettes, which they can not purchase until 20, everything else applies. Penal and civil as well.

This year and next year the "Coming of Age" ceremonies were held and will be held for 20 year old's but they are not officially called "Coming of Age", 成人式 or seijinshiki, they were called something different, and the 成人式will be at 18 in upcoming years.

In western English anyone 19 years or younger can be referred to as a “youth” regardless of their legal status as an adult.

18 year old youth is incorrect. The law changed in April 2022.

The bad is stronger than the good because we humans evolved

Are you saying that there was a point in time where we ignored the bad? That's backwards. We're designed to remember dangers and bad things that happen as a protection mechanism, to tell us to be more alert for that possible danger in the future. This is a leftover from humanity's development, where we often lived in constant danger due less or no laws, depending on how far you go back, and less group protection. The problem is that we still have this heightened sense of danger, but we are reading of the ills of all the planet on the internet, and it can overwhelm some people's feelings of fear, as they were built to be afraid of all the things that could happen to a village, not an entire planet. It's why less-intelligent people are more prone to fear, and more prone to authoritarianism, and therefore turn to the angry far-right.

Is violent and and irrational crime becoming more frequent now than before, or is it a case of more diligent reporting?

The latter. Crime numbers show Japan is safer now than at any point in history.

According to my fallible memory, I believe violent crimes in the past were more likely to be enacted by petty criminals. I sense the new violent normal is being carried out by the deranged.

Your memory may be correct, about that, but you are referring to the things that you happened across on your desktop surfings, which is not an accurate way to determine a problem on a macro level.

@jeancolmar In today society it seems the bad gets rewarded and the good gets punished. In other words Bad is stronger than Good. Think about this a person tends to be more upset about losing $50 dollars than being more happy about gaining $50 dollars. The bad is stronger than the good because we humans evolved:, it seems today that it is more adaptive to avoid the bad than to search out the good. Because of our evolutionary supplied love of fear and preference for the bad, our modern day news is 24/7 reporting about bad and scary things. Violence is always newsworthy think about it peace is not. No one wants to hear 24/7 that someone was nice to someone. It seems today that niceness is tossed in at the end of a segment on the latest school shooting by an angry gunman, but real news is the latest school shooting by an angry gunman. So, because humans evolved—which is why the bad is stronger than the good. We tend to think that all the bad news is the whole truth and most people who read JT tend to convict an alleged criminal before they even hear or get all the facts. But it’s only a small part of truth. Ask yourself when is fear rational?

Dear JT readers:

have arrested an 18-year-old youth on suspicion of attempted murder after he stabbed

Simple solution, throw him in jail for 20 years.

That’ll smarten him up.

but has so far given no motive

"wanted to know how does it feel to stab people"

Usual motive, just like the bunch of other weirdos in this place.

Now imagine if these people had access to guns.

Never let your guard down.

STOP! 18 years old is an adult not a "youth"! Japan legally lowered the age from 20 to 18 last year. He is a young adult, and thus, his name is legally allowed to be shared publicly.

He will be tried as an adult!
