Police in Chiba are investigating a series of thefts at two high schools in which 80 students were robbed of a total of ¥360,000.

According to police, around midday on Wednesday, a number of students at Chiba West High School located in Mihama Ward, reported having had the money they intended to use for lunch, stolen from their bags which had been left in their classrooms, TV Asahi reported. In all, 51 students reported losses of about ¥210,000.

In a similar incident the same day at Kemigawa High School located approximately 1.5 km away from Chiba West, 29 students reported having had their lunch money stolen while they were away from the classroom on break. The losses amounted to ¥150,000.

Police said that at both schools, all the students affected were third year students, and the incidents both occurred during a period of the morning when the classrooms were empty.

Write reading the comments about the average sum of money makes me wonder about the average intelligence of the commenters. Nobody did they were to use 4000 yen for ONE lunch, and in this country many kids and earn their pocket money.what's so difficult to comprehend?

I'm going to guess the ones you see are university students.

I don't SEE these kids, I know them personally. They're not bad students, either.

No, tmarie, some may ban it, most surely do not, judging by the sheer number of kids with baitos. I personally know quite a few kids with jobs, and there are tons of kids with jobs in conbini, restaurants, etc.

I'm going to guess the ones you see are university students. It is very rare for a HS kid to have a job. Why? Entrance exams. Unless those kids work at tech schools or poor academic schools, most have a ban on jobs. I've knowa few who ignore the rule but this is Japan and the schools do make such BS rules.

It's not the Amounts but those were the schools lunch fees and similar.

4000yen is not that much. Living in a poor country 12 years ago I always had like 1500yen

I guess you are unaware that most HS here ban students from having PT jobs and that the only way these kids get money is from mommy and daddy.

I don't go to ATM everyday, either .... go once every few weeks and when the cash runs out, go again ...

$41 each for lunch? What are they eating - filet mignon?

It's pretty amazing that someone can go through 80 bags without anyone noticing anything.

It's not really. Many classes will have 40 students to a class. Hit two classes while the students are out and you've got easy pickings. Schools aren't all that easy to get into but once your in? You can hit anywhere you like as teachers are either teaching or hidingin the teacher's room. Often the teacher's room is located away from classrooms so anyone can walk around and steal what they like.

whoever seen probably was let in on the loot or threatened... whoever did this has a "bright" future ahead

The amount of money seems reasonable for high school students. It's pretty amazing that someone can go through 80 bags without anyone noticing anything.

I'm sure many of the kids have part time jobs and some money of their own.

That being said, HS students are a good bet to rip off because many do carry various amounts of cash on them. I'll go for staff in the schools working together. Nothing says honest and "safety" Japan than HS kids getting their money ripped off... Why anyone would leave their wallet and money in an empty room is beyond me but I see it here all the time.

It may be prudent that school should equip with video surveillance camera esp high school.

Um, somebody failed math! ¥260,000 stolen from the first school and a further ¥50,000 from the second school does not add up to ¥360,000, does it?

School kids should not be carrying large amounts of money and they should definitely not be leaving it in their bags unattended. While I am disappointed by this theft, I am not surprised.

Just because the article writer (or the police or whoever) says it was money to pay for lunch, it does not necessarily mean that every single yen was meant for that. They simply had on average 4000 yen in their wallets, which I do not think is unusual for an 18-year old.

Is this some kind of quantum mathematics? Since when does 210,000 plus 50,000 equal 360,000?

If they had a lot of money for lunch it was probably from their savings or they want to buy something else after school.. it's common sense..

HS kids here & savings? Outside of their yearly otoshi-dama just where in the heck do they get their money from? You assume much, while some may have jobs most HS kids here do not, and their money comes from their parents.

It's common sense.

It's really not uncommon for people to carry that much money in cash in Japan, even if you're a student, since you basically can't use credit cards anywhere. I'm not surprised that the thief managed to find so much money.

Those kids were planning to spend 4,000 yen each on lunch?

If you average it, yes. I'd say some kids had over 10,000yen while the rest had under 1000yen

I think I had more or less about $20 my entire time through high school. These kids were getting some serious lunches
