Write reading the comments about the average sum of money makes me wonder about the average intelligence of the commenters. Nobody did they were to use 4000 yen for ONE lunch, and in this country many kids and earn their pocket money.what's so difficult to comprehend?

I'm going to guess the ones you see are university students. It is very rare for a HS kid to have a job. Why? Entrance exams. Unless those kids work at tech schools or poor academic schools, most have a ban on jobs. I've knowa few who ignore the rule but this is Japan and the schools do make such BS rules.

It's not the Amounts but those were the schools lunch fees and similar.

4000yen is not that much. Living in a poor country 12 years ago I always had like 1500yen

It's not really. Many classes will have 40 students to a class. Hit two classes while the students are out and you've got easy pickings. Schools aren't all that easy to get into but once your in? You can hit anywhere you like as teachers are either teaching or hidingin the teacher's room. Often the teacher's room is located away from classrooms so anyone can walk around and steal what they like.

That being said, HS students are a good bet to rip off because many do carry various amounts of cash on them. I'll go for staff in the schools working together. Nothing says honest and "safety" Japan than HS kids getting their money ripped off... Why anyone would leave their wallet and money in an empty room is beyond me but I see it here all the time.

It may be prudent that school should equip with video surveillance camera esp high school.

School kids should not be carrying large amounts of money and they should definitely not be leaving it in their bags unattended. While I am disappointed by this theft, I am not surprised.

Just because the article writer (or the police or whoever) says it was money to pay for lunch, it does not necessarily mean that every single yen was meant for that. They simply had on average 4000 yen in their wallets, which I do not think is unusual for an 18-year old.

HS kids here & savings? Outside of their yearly otoshi-dama just where in the heck do they get their money from? You assume much, while some may have jobs most HS kids here do not, and their money comes from their parents.

It's really not uncommon for people to carry that much money in cash in Japan, even if you're a student, since you basically can't use credit cards anywhere. I'm not surprised that the thief managed to find so much money.

If you average it, yes. I'd say some kids had over 10,000yen while the rest had under 1000yen
