Police in Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, have arrested a 54-year-old woman on suspicion of murder after she drove a car into the sea, causing an 80-year-old man in the front passenger seat to drown.

The incident occurred at around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the port of Hamamachi, Kyodo News reported.

According to police, Miyuki Harada was driving with Masayuki Mizushima. Nearby security camera footage showed the car suddenly veer off the pier and plunged into the sea.

Harada managed to escape from the car, but Mizushima drowned.

Police said Harada has denied any intent to kill Mizushima. She was quoted as saying “I met him at his previous workplace, and we were in a relationship where we would talk about our problems. But I suddenly panicked while driving and felt that I wanted to die. Once we were in the water, I was so preoccupied with my own safety that I didn't have time to think about Mizushima."

But I suddenly panicked while driving and felt that I wanted to die

That sounds like the confession of a guilty person.

I suddenly panicked while driving and felt that I wanted to die

this is so common in this place, apparently everyone regardless of age just thinks about dying, disappearing, etc. one of the highest IQ people on earth.... they think very little of their own lives

Sounds strange to me....

Do they both enjoy sport fishing? Had either of them ever been to the port of Hamamachi previously? It is likely that the driver drove to the port with the intention of committing suicide -- then the shock of the cold seawater flooding into the car jolted her back into reality..."and we were in a relationship where we would talk about our problems." [Translation] = 'we always talked about ending our misery together'...

I guess she wasn’t too preoccupied operating the vehicle and didn’t think about her safety while driving but once in the water she realized her life was more important. Leads me to think she is very selfish and stuck in her own mindset the guy was 80 years old and she’s 54 a person who does selective reasoning to benefit herself.

I was so preoccupied with my own safety that I didn't have time to think about Mizushima."

So another murder-suicide where the murderer backs out?
