Police in Tendo, Yamagata Prefecture, have arrested an 81-year-old man on suspicion of killing his 71-year-old wife at their home.
According to police, Hiroyuki Kikuchi went to a police station at 4:40 a.m. on Tuesday and said he had killed his wife, Fuji TV reported. Police went to his home and found his wife, Kotoko, fully clothed, lying dead on the floor near the bathroom.
Kikuchi was quoted as saying he strangled his wife with a cord sometime on Monday night.

"he strangled his wife with a cord sometime on Monday night." why? has he given the police any reason for his actions? did she have a terminal illness? was it some thing he did out of compassion or hatred ? for what ever reason, do you still lock up an 81 YO man in prison?

It's a big problem in Japan as there is an increasingly aging population in prisons. Three meals and free amenities, it's better than homeless for many.
