Police said Monday that an 82-year-old woman died after being hit by a car in Miho, Ibaraki Prefecture. The driver of the car is still at large, police said.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 6 p.m. Sunday. The woman, identified as Meiko Kato, lived nearby. TBS reported that while she was walking to a restaurant, she was first hit by a side mirror on a motorcycle driven by a 17-year-old youth. That knocked her off balance and she fell into the path of an oncoming a white car.

The motorcyclist stopped, but the car kept going.

Kato was taken to hospital with severe head injuries but was pronounced dead on arrival, police said.

Too sad. There is such little room for error on the roads here in Japan, and the driver must have panicked, knowing this would probably ruin his/her life. But the driver still should have stopped.

I find it that there is no fault in car driver, but careless behaviour of Motorcycle driver. For sure, white car's must have panicked , thinking he will get a trial, but he couldn't do anything to prevent it.

True, the car probably didn't know who hit her first but unfortunately now he is going to have to pay the price after he is caught or turns him or herself in.

When I first came to Japan people used to talk about how honest Japanese were and how foreigners were terrible because they never said sorry after an accident.

But it seems every week I hear about someone knocking someone over and not even stopping to help.

Is this a recent thing?

Funny how everyone either blames the motorcycle rider or the car driver. Do you folks bother to ask yourselves why neither saw her in time? If I have seen one, I have a seen a million old Japanese crossing any old patch of road at any hour at any angle at all speeds but fast, walking as if they are crossing their yard, head down. They seem to be demanding a type of respect that physics just can't afford!

Try hypnotizing the 17 year old for he may have actually seen the license number on the car.

Just a passing thought.

Yes, because everyone in a country, without fail, is absolutely perfect.

There will always be the one-offs and horror stories; this is true of any country. On a whole, though, people are talking in general terms.

The reason almost everyone seems to run is because they were doing something illegal at the time of the accident. I'll bet dollars to donuts that the driver was either speeding, impaired, talking/sending texts on a cellphone or driving without a valid license.

Wow! After enduring 82 years of life she is first hit by a cowboy and then killed by a coward! Hope they catch the scum bag!
