86-year-old woman found strangled to death at home

Police in Oyama, Tochigi Prefecture, said Wednesday that an 86-year-old woman was found strangled to death at her home on Tuesday.

According to police, the victim, Tomoe Sugahara, was found in the first-floor living room of her house by a male friend in his 90s who came to visit her at around 11:40 a.m. Tuesday. The man called Sugahara’s relatives who then called 110.

Police said that Sugahara, who lived alone, was already dead when they arrived. They said there were strangulation marks on her neck that looked like they had been made by a thin cord.

The man who found her told police he had tried to phone her a few times on Tuesday morning and when he got no reply, he became worried about her. He said he last spoke with Sunahara at around 5 p.m. on Monday afternoon

I wonder if she was first contacted by some scam artist pretending to be a relative wanting money & when he went to collect she realized he was not a family member and he killed her. I would not be surprised.

There really needs to be a system of daily visits to elderly people living alone, if only to see them at the door and wish them a good morning.
