Police in Yokohama have arrested an 87-year-old man on suspicion of dangerous driving resulting in death after his car hit and killed a man as he exited from a parking lot on Sunday.
The incident occurred at around 12 noon, NTV reported. Police said the driver, Kokichi Takei, told them he pressed the accelerator too hard.
According to police,Takei was driving out of a coin parking lot near Azamino Station when he crashed through the bar at the entrance and hit a man in his 70s who was standing next to a building across the street. The man was taken to hospital, but was later confirmed dead.

Unfortunately, it is a worldwide problem, elderly people involved in car accidents. It is extremely hard for someone to recognize, admit that has no more conditions to drive safely. So, a suggestion would be to make the use of car cameras mandatory and record the driving image and data and submit it to analysis.

Over age 70 and you should only be allowed to drive a car with the safety features that prevent this.
My car has complete 360 pedestrian, bicycle, anti collision etc and it works.
It literally will not you drive into something at any speed.
Out of control mamma-chari riders looking at smartphones, scooters and such are less of a worry too with such systems.
Not going to always save you at 100kph, but in the described situation above it would have worked perfectly and prevent any impact.

They should also arrest everyone involved at the DMV that issued his license to dive at that age.

All the generations after his have packed up and gone to Tokyo. There's nobody around to take their keys.

Yokohama has a massive public transportation system. At 87 there is no reason to be driving in a city that has efficient public transportation. When I get old and no longer drive I am moving to the city.

I belive they should remind old geeze that long prison sentences are applicable even for oldies, ie like a death sentence.
Here we have a 70 year old man killed, but shall we wait a full family to be run over ?

87 years old. Maybe it's time for him to surrender his keys and go by metro instead?
