Police in Sakai, Osaka, said Tuesday that an 86-year-old man who set fire to himself and jumped in a pond is being questioned about the murder of an 89-year-old woman who lived nextdoor to him.

According to police, Chikako Kimura was found by her 53-year-old son at around 6:40 p.m. Monday, Fuji TV reported. Police said Kimura was lying face-up on her bed with numerous knife wounds to her chest and stomach. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police said Kimura was found in her dressing gown, and that no weapon or signs of a struggle or any other disturbance were found in the apartment.

On Tuesday at around 5:30 a.m., Kimura's neighbor went to a nearby pond, set fire to himself and then jumped in. He was taken to hospital where he is in a stable condition.

He was quoted by police as saying he was having some trouble with Kimura. Police said they plan to issue an arrest warrant after he recovers.

Killed the old girl then set himself on fire and then jumped in. One cowardly act followed by another.

Not to make light of a desperate situation, but wouldn't jumping into the pond tend to extinguish the flames, somewhat negating the impact of setting himself on fire? Odd sequence of events.

I think he thought setting himself on fire was actually a bad idea, so he jumped in the pond to extinguish the flames.

He's 86, he will never go to jail.

Yeah, agreed. This guy will never see the inside for a prison. Some supervised home, maybe, but that's it. A tragedy the woman died at the hands of this maniac.

He was quoted by police as saying he was having some trouble with Kimura.

It seems that for some reason, his house has been illegally occupying Kimura's private property while Kimura has been repeatedly asking him to move into other place that probably led to this incident.

Actually, it seems that some elderly Japanese people commit crimes precisely so that they will go to prison.

Possible new Darwin Award in the geriatric category. Yes, setting yourself on fire will result in you becoming extremely hot and probably wanting to jump in a pond. In all seriousness though, poor old lady. To live a long life and then meet your end that way is very sad.

He had to go to the pond to begin with though..

There aren't many 86 year old rational thinkers anyways.

At 86 years of age, you should be enjoying your golden years; playing golf, raising pigeons or whatever. You shouldn't be out killing even older pensioners and setting yourself on fire. Damn.

RIP poor lady.
