Police in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, have arrested an 87-year-old man on suspicion of murder after he pushed a 91-year-old woman in a wheelchair down a flight of stairs on Friday night.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 7 p.m. Friday at a residence for elderly people, Sankei Shimbun reported. Police said the suspect is accused of pushing Sachiko Matsuo down the stairs from the second floor.

An employee of the facility heard the noise and called 119. Matsuo was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead due to a severe head injury.

Surveillance camera footage at the facility showed the man pushing the wheelchair down the stairs. He also lives at the facility, on the same floor as Matsuo.

Police said the suspect, whose name hasn’t been released, has denied intent to kill the woman but gave no reason for his act.

Dementia has taken its course

Because the whole thing was caught on security camera and the police arrested the man.

No they didn't. The police can't look at the security cameras in Japan. Security cameras are only used during trials.

Yes, they did. The police of Japan have the right to look at any security cameras if somebody claimed something is wrong, and if necessary, they can arrest the suspect on the spot.

Of course, the contents of the camera are used during trials as evidence.

Taking advantage of a person's disability like this is for scumbags. it's cowardly I hope this jerk is heading for the hoosegow.

This is tragic. It's possible the man was suffering from dementia? Patients can become irrational and lash out for no reason. A terrible illness.

If your in a care home you are either a) disabled, b) doolally, or c) a combination of both.

Shameful comment.

Stairs at an elderly care facility... What could go wrong?

Why is there an implicit assumption of guilt in the article?

Because the whole thing was caught on security camera and the police arrested the man.

Of course there is no way to stop premeditated acts of people determined to injure others, but no measures are mentioned to be in place to make difficult for incidents in the stairs to happen.

We dont know the details. Might very well be dementia.
