No cameras? No guards? If you can afford a 200 million yen diamond you would be able to afford a guard watching the diamond.

Unlike precious metals which have a standard price worldwide, there is no such standard for Diamond pricing. So, diamonds are worth whatever your customer is willing to pay for them. Diamonds are certainly not rare either. Diamond syndicates like De Beers are sitting on mountains of diamonds.

So, if the case was unlocked, it has to be somebody with access to the keys. If the case was busted open, it was obviously not strong enough to be holding a 20 million dollar diamond.

Maybe it's only an overpriced laboratory diamond.

Vapour deposition methods produce diamonds cheaper than mined diamonds but they don’t come with the “blood diamond” cachet!
There seems something seriously wrong here or possibly the report has missed out a lot of information? Why was the case so insecure? Why did no one notice it was gone for about an hour? Why was there an apparent lack of security? No guards, cameras, alarms and what were the staff manning the stand doing?
A lot of unanswered questions here me thinks!

well, if they didnt really care that much.. maybe it wasnt the real cost...

How convenient, the case unlocked, and some casual passerby lifts the diamond? I think not!
Welcome to the Japanese manner of talking around the bush. Here is Japan everyone will translate this statement to read, "It was in the case" also could just be a matter of who translated the original article!
Why? Japanese trade in illegal goods all the time, why wouldnt it still be here?

Sorry, 2 million dollar diamond.

Laboratory created diamonds

Diamonds are a ripp-off in the first place.

Is it the real story ? Last week, the Japanese guy that claimed his 800K euro watch was stolen in Paris. That was a copy he had.
Nobody needs the jewel diams. You're the only person knowing yours is real. See below.
It's for industry. Yes, they work better and we no longer need workers ruining their health in mines.
There is. Not new. Since Antiquity. Glass "crystal", glass with lead or whatever. It is common in jewelry and accessories. Crap quality looks bad, but the higher end do the job. To the point that you need to ask an expert to tell you if your stones are real.

If there ever really was a diamond, it was probably worth much less, but they will say it's worth 200 million when they file the insurance claim.

Diamond worth ¥200 mil
Something is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

Perhaps, the Diamond was insurance for 200 millions Yen.

Maybe they should look into the newly purchased home near Kailua Beach by the jewelry show staff member.

I love a good heist story but the diamond doesn't have a name, expect Hollywood to call it " Crushed in Amsterdam "

Great...now I have the Lupin III theme in my head.

I wonder if a show visitor pointed out to the staff that their showcase was unlocked, and they then hurried that visitor on to another location ?
Sounds like an inside job... insurance job ?
Who were the Insurers ?
kurisupisu
No way 200 million yen-insurance ripoff!

With fake diamonds that can be created exactly same as real ones, who needs real diamonds now?
