Elementary school teacher arrested after leaving smartphone in girls changing room

Japan is no stranger to unfortunate crimes of perversion, but typically when the perpetrator is caught, they’re honest about what they did and why.

For example, the man who peed in a coworker’s drink bottle because he liked her confessed that… well, he peed in her bottle because he liked her.

But sometimes they don’t want to admit what they’ve done, such as what happened with a recent case at an elementary school in Numata, Gunma Prefecture.

Hirotoshi Ono, a 28-year-old male teacher who worked at the school, was arrested on Sept 16 for leaving his smartphone in the girls changing room and recording with it. It was apparently hidden inside the cover of a dictionary, and police investigated after being contacted by the school principal.

While Ono has admitted to leaving the smartphone inside the girls changing room, he also said this regarding why he did it: “I put it there in case there were any problems in the changing room.”

That certainly sounds like a desperate excuse from someone clinging to the last thread of plausible deniability, and Japanese netizens tended to agree:

“Did he actually think that excuse makes any sense?”

“Oh, okay. No problem. If that’s why you did it, no big deal!”

“That’s not even okay if it was the truth!”

“It feels like there’s been more of these kinds of crimes involving teachers lately.”

Sounds to me like a guy who is worried about something else!

Sex offenders list now, please.

Might as well make new sections of news on JT.

Police crimes and Sexual Predators.

seems like there’s at least one or the other everyday.

Such a caring teacher to use his personal phone to monitor the girls in case of trouble in the change rooms. (Sarcasm)

What a joke. At least he could have thought his lie through a little better. If he "put it there in case there were any problems in the changing room", why hide it "inside the cover of a dictionary"? Like come on! Teachers should be able to do better than that!

I really do love Japanese excuses. They are really original

the police here aren't too bright so maybe he thought it was worth a shot?

Japanese perversion in on par with all societies. But I feel sick when a bloke advocating for a sex register is voted down 3 time. That just sick for any person to do tha

If it was hidden "inside the cover" of a book, then wouldn't it only be able to record sound and no video?

John-San - Japanese perversion in on par with all societies

I’m not sure about that. I don’t know of any other society where you can do a course in upskirt photography.

Man, I hate Soranews. Did it happen this year, 3 years ago? When and where?

I'm going to be the devils advocate a little bit here. Depending on what other information comes out, I'm going to withhold judgement. although the guy clearly made a mistake. If it was in a book cover where he couldn't see anything, I'm wondering if a girl had talked to him about being bullied and he was trying to find out. My girlfriend has told me about a girl that used to torment her anytime they were away from teachers from middle school through high-school. This included in the locker rooms.. not excusing his behavior, especially if people are right that this is the 2nd offense (I tend to take comment section notes with a grain of salt).

Before anyone comes after me, the was clearly the wrong way to do it no matter what the reasoning. But this story is also lacking a huge amount of information.

This 'article' sounds more like a 'comment' we would find here on JT than 'news'. In any case, the guy's purported 'excuse' is completely intellectually consistent with his purported behavior. And as repugnant as this behavior may be, better this than what we see so often reported from India and many other cultures...

In my home country , the UK, eyebrows are raised when a teacher gets married to an ex student. Not here, it seems to be the norm in both junior and senior high schools. Always male teacher, female ex student.

I wonder how they found out.

Is a dictionary's location in a changing room normal to you ?

Never saw one before.

Silly predator.

“I put it there in case there were any problems in the changing room."

Ouch. Is there some reward for the dumbest excuse ever invented?

Oh, Japan!

Rookie mistake. He should have bought a used phone and used that instead. At least he could have then walked away from it when it was found.

The jokey tone of the article trivialises the crime. A paedophile teacher is not funny.

So, what's the problem?

Japan needs to get with the late 20th century and create a nationwide, searchable sec offender registry

Do you mean searchable by anyone? If so, according to Wikipedia, the Unites States is the only country with a publicly searchable sex offenders registry. And discussion on this site does sometimes question what century parts of the USA are in.

Regarding the article, it says the teacher was "recording" with his smartphone, but doesn't say whether it was sound or video recording. If a sound recording, that might give support to his excuse.

If it was in a book cover where he couldn't see anything,

Regarding the article, it says the teacher was "recording" with his smartphone, but doesn't say whether it was sound or video recording

While it's possible that he was only audio-recording, it's more likely he was video-recording through a simple hole cut on the book's cover. It is a standard method to spy on baby-sitters and pet-sitters, as well as by garden variety voyeurs like this teacher appears to be.

Honestly not the most ridiculous of stories around here. Maybe I've been around for longer than others.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

If we should get a “sex offender list”, we should also get all the other crimes list - from murder to jaywalking. It doesn’t matter if you served your time or rehabilitated, if you do one crime, you’re marked for life. No chance for self redemption.

Is this what you want?

Rookie mistake. He should have bought a used phone and used that instead. At least he could have then walked away from it when it was found.

Maybe, but fingerprints and finding out where the phone was bought would be useful to police too. Probably not too difficult to narrow down the suspects with just a little bit of info.
