That is one smug guy.

Takanohana is considered an advocate of reform in a sport that has also been rocked by allegations of match-fixing and hazing in the past.

Yeah, he wants ONLY Japanese wrestlers and HE wants to be the head of the association, nothing else matters.

Any chance of resolving this matter amicably is now dead.

If that was true then why does he have Mongolians in his stable instead of all Japanese. I agree though that this is an old old sport that should have only Japanese and that they should fight or be pitted against the world's best from other countries.  Same goes for US sports, only Americans should be allowed to participate in US sports not foreigners and vice versa on the same teams. The political correct immigration of sports actually takes away from the sport.

How so?

A summary indictment was filed Thursday against former sumo grand champion Harumafuji for assaulting a lower-ranked fellow wrestler

Don't forget that the goal of the "summary indictment" was to fine him, as stated in a previous JT story on the subject. There won't be any effort to put him in jail.

He went open to the police about a crime so he’s being punished because the people in charge of sumo didn’t want the bad publicity. That’s all.

Excuse me? There was NO crime committed against him, and he pressured Takanoiwa into filing the report as he is his stablemaster.

Takanohana is an arse.

If that was true then why does he have Mongolians in his stable instead of all Japanese.

Because until Takanohana is good enough as a stable master, (he isnt) it is costing himself a ton of cash to keep his wrestlers fed. The wrestlers get NO pay until they become juyryo and Takanohana's stable is short on cash, and Takanoiwa makes money for his stable!

You've repeated that Takanohana's prejudice against Mongolian wrestlers was behind this escapade several times. And I think most recognize the "lament that there are no Japanese wresters" exists although I tend to think it's voiced mostly by the sports announcers. But if you are correct, the above explanation doesn't support your view. After all, by being against Mongolian wrestlers he's against his own money maker Takanoiwa. Do you have some other evidence to support your view of Takanohana's prejudice?

To me all its looks solely like an issue Takaohana has with the JSA.

Getting real tired of this story on the news.

The world of Sumo clearly yet another part of Japanese society where institutionalised bullying reigns.

Sumo without Harumafuji is going to be very boring!

I think that Takanohana should be kicked out of the JSA altogether and Harumafuji should replace him as director.

Welcome to Sakoku 2.0, Takanohana style. It's absolutely no secret that Takanohana wishes foreigners were banned from sumo altogether for dominating the sport in recent years. But rather than motivating and pushing his Japanese wrestlers to train harder and simply be better, he opted to go with this cowardly, underhanded effort to get rid of foreign wrestlers by trying them in the court of public opinion, a la the tired, stale, and wholly racist, "See how these foreign brutes are incapable of understanding the sophisticated and mysterious ways of Japanese sumo?"

Meanwhile, Japanese sumo reguarly go out, drink a boatload, do stupid things, and enjoy full protection from public scrutiny by the JSA.

Takanohana's a hack and his efforts to "purify" the sport only serve to ensure that Japanese wrestlers will remain weak and unevolved in a world that otherwise wouldn't give them a passing glance anymore amid all the match-rigging and general atrophying of the sport.

There is nothing I like about Takanohana! I am waiting for the Sumo association to fire his arrogant arse!
