Miyazaki prefectural police have arrested a 22-year-old member of Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) on suspicion of attempted murder after he allegedly strangled his teenage ex-girlfriend on Sunday.

According to police, Tomoya Birukawa, who is stationed at Camp Kokubu in Kagoshima Prefecture’s Kirishima City, was visiting his ex-girlfriend’s home in Miyakonojo City at around 1 a.m. on Sunday when he started to strangle her with both hands, local media reported. The victim was able to break free and placed an emergency call in which she said “A man won’t leave my apartment and he choked me.”

Birukawa was still at the apartment when police arrived and was taken into custody. The victim suffered a minor neck injury.

Why is this news?

Because attempted murder is traditionally considered to be "news" in most of the civilized world. Is it not that way where you are from?

Why is this news?

Because there has been an alleged attempted murder.

Well, what led to the alleged choking?

...Are you seriously asking that question? As in, can you think of any justifiable reason that someone should be choking another person? Especially when that someone is a military-trained adult male, choking a teenage female?

This is a problem. Military personnel are trained in combat and trusted with lethal weapons. Imagine if this person had acted similarly in a real combat situation, murdering innocent civilian teenagers. That would have been international news, and a big blow on Japans reputation.

Agreed. I think that at this point in time. Japans GSDF's are better off confined to Japan, until certain personnel learn self-control.

He was "visiting her at around 1:00AM." Well, what led to the alleged choking? We need the full story before jumping to any conclusions to better understand this situation. There are always three sides to a story. Plus, her being a teenager calling the police saying "“A man won’t leave my apartment and he choked me". Is this to assume she was a teenager living in her own apartment or with her parents? Or, maybe an apartment that the suspect was paying for? And, no, I am not advocating violence.
