Police on Wednesday arrested a 27-year-old man who delivers parcels for Japan Post on suspicion of theft after he went missing with the delivery van and dozens of packages in Kyoto on May 9.
The van was found at around 1 p.m. Wednesday in a parking lot in Higashiyama Ward. The delivery man, Kazuki Shouno, was sleeping in the van, police said.
Officials of the Kinki Regional Post Office said that Shouno had loaded his white mini-van with dozens of Yu-Pack parcels from Sakyo Post Office in Sakyo Ward, and then left on May. But he failed to deliver any parcels and did not return that day, and no one has been able to contact him since.
When he was found, all the parcels were still in the van but several thousand yen given to him by Japan Post was gone.
Shouno is employed by an outsourced delivery company in Osaka Prefecture. On May 10, the company requested a search for the missing driver at Shimogamo Police Station.
Employees at the Kinki Regional Post Office have been contacting the recipients and senders of the missing Yu-Pack parcels to explain the situation. Some staff members have directly visited clients' homes to apologize for the inconvenience caused by their not receiving their parcels.
Editor's note: Story has been updated to show that the driver was found and arrested.

Wow, I couldn't even get an investigation started with the US post office when a package sent from a friend in Japan worth about $200 was lost (at my local hub no less) without a call from the Japanese post office and these guys are visiting people's homes to apologize for packages being late...
I guess this is why my friend could not even conceive of the idea that the box he sent me was actually lost by our post office.

Did this happen when JP was a government entity? Is this contractor to the private JP compensated adequately?
