Guy probably figured he could either go to American prison, or Japanese prison (since he milked Japanese investors, the government would come after him here too most likely). Based off the age and type of crime, he'd be most likely sent to a minimum security prison in the US, which gives him more freedoms and rights than a Japanese prison.
