Man arrested after spitting on store manager who asked him to wear mask

Police in Nasukarasuyama, Tochigi Prefecture, have arrested a 67-year-old man on suspicion of assault after he hit and spat on a supermarket manager who asked him to wear a face mask while in the store.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 11:55 a.m. on April 2, Sankei Shimbun reported. Police said Hiroshi Chiba, of no fixed occupation, entered the Tanokura supermarket, not wearing a face mask. The 47-year-old manager asked Chiba to wear a mask as per the store's request to all customers as a measure against the coronavirus. However, Chiba got angry, spat on the store manager’s face and also punched him in the face.

Police said Chiba, who was arrested on Thursday, has admitted shoving the manager away but denied spitting on him. He was quoted as saying he just coughed in the manager's direction.

Store staff told police Chiba regularly bought items in the store but he never wore a mask and always ignored employees’ request to do so.

Ahhhhh, another sad and pathetic angry man-infant.

Maybe he needs a little nap or a nipple to suck on.

Please lock this fool away and throw away the key.

Thank you.

You’re right, not 30 times!

Actually, according to worldmeters, the deaths/1M in Japan is 74. In SD it’s 2,192. That’s only 29.6 times Japan’s death rate. Certainly not 30 times! /s

Seapig, If I had that much trouble reading statistics, Id keep my mouth shut.

I would certainly suggest that you follow your own advice, Bob. It seems quite sound.

If I were spit on, it would have been me going to jail and him going in some other direction in a different sort of vehicle...

Spitting anywhere and before others is quite normal for older ojiiji, so usually nobody notices, despite of us , the foreigners. Maybe, you even think it is a statement against you, so did I in the first years, but that’s probably not so often the case. But who really knows...lol Anyway, acceptance of that strange behavior has changed a bit under corona conditions. It’s obviously a virus spreading now. Someone should have told him insistingly. On the other side they wouldn’t care so much anyway, spitting around and , although in endangered age groups , not wearing masks, that’s completely ‘normal’. They also walk at red signals or diagonally over the street , even if the marked crosswalk is only a few meters away , and so on. No one will ever change them during their last years, and we here even more certainly not.

While I don't condone the actions of the pitiful man-child, this will continue to happen if you keep forcing people to do what they hate.

Their store their rules.

Funny how no shoes no shirt no service doesn't get people upset but no mask and they go ballistic.

Just another angry old man child. Unfortunately not much can be done except hope that one day he pulls his bs on someone who puts him in his place. The gutter.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

I dont like the self-declared mask police either, but that is just "stupid"

Yes like when people don't understand the difference between a "self declared" and a store manager enforcing his stores policies.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Wearing a mask is better than wearing nothing at all. There are many critics that say wearing a mask is ineffective against the virus. If that is the case why wear a mask for the common cold. WEARING IS CARING!!

If this was south korea, the guy would have been heavily fined and jailed for years already. Is because we don't have strict restriction laws here concerning covid that people think they can do these kind of things like coughing or spitting against others and still get away with it. Just look at that guy who refuse to wear a mask on planes awhile back.

‘Spitting’ on a person and/or in any public area: on the grass or ground in the park; on the sidewalk or pavement; outside an opened car door; is ALL ‘deplorable’ and absolutely unsanitary. Witnessed it too many times!

There seems to be an obsession with spraying body fluids in Japan. With that being said, and *we’re afraid to ask, @Goodlucktoyou 6:41p, what *in the world is “*couching in my face**”? Is this and other ‘expelling of bodily fluids in a public place’ legal in Japan? Are there criminal charges, citations and fines for it? Again, see it ALL *happening, all to often.

@bob

*Yes - the infection/death rate in those dangerous places are off the charts. Covid death rate in SD is *30 times that of Japan.

Totally false statement. Its nowhere close to that.

""Chiba regularly bought items in the store""

Should have been bared from entering the store till he starts wearing a mask, some people just don't listen especially the Oyaji's .

5 ( +5 / -0 )

If the store won't let you in with no mask, just don't shop there. That store's prerogative. I don't understand the reaction unless as another poster implies, he has mental stability issues.

Sorry, @K_Y 7:46p. There’s no mention in the article that he’s “mentally ill”.

- “as for punishment, how can you punish him if he's homeless?”

According to the article,

- “Police said Chiba admitted shoving the mgr away but denied spitting on him, saying he just coughed in the mgr’s direction. Store staff told police Chiba regularly bought items in the store, never wore a mask and always ignored employees’ request to do so.”

Sounds like he’s fully cognizant so there’s NO indication he’s “mentally ill”. However, his actions seem ‘methodical, calculating, deliberate, “cold” and, without remorse. Upon closer medical examination and some DNA swabbing, it will probably be verified he’s a 99.9% icehole.

Most mentally ill in Japan get deposited in hospitals and never get out. They missed this one.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Forget covid for a moment where does it come from that you can spit on a complete stranger doing their job.

My mum would have whopped me for spitting on the floor let alone another person.

he hit and spat on a supermarket manager who asked him to wear a face mask

Filth.

The anti-maskers tend not to be too bright or rational and are often just reciting from the hymn sheet ( anti-vaccination etc,), but they are generally, not always, a bit more hygienic than this.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

I never wear a paper mask apart from hospital or dojo. About once or twice week old Japanese men pull down their mask and deliberately couch in my face. I would really like to punch their face, but that would make me the same lowlife they are.

In order to defeat the virus, everyone must "pull together".

-6 ( +11 / -17 )

"Chiba got angry, spat on the store manager’s face and also punched him in the face". Oh what a nice man he is, He certainly needs to be charged with two accounts of assault,

"has admitted shoving the manager away" could this be another charge of assault?

I dont think that the manager needs this sort of agro from any customers, as for being spat on that is disgusting , and in this present climate with Covid every where, this needs to be stopped right now, as for punishment, how can you punish him if hes homeless? its not unreasnable for the manager to ask him to put on a face mask, even if hes not got one, give him one, then there is no excuse.
