Police in Fukuoka have arrested a 69-year-old man on suspicion of assaulting the manager of a discount drugstore, after a cashier handed him change from a purchase instead of putting it on a tray.
According to police, Noriyoshi Naganuma entered the Cosmos drugstore in Sawara Ward at around 9 p.m. Sunday, Fuji TV reported. He bought a can of shochu and paid the 34-year-old woman cashier. However, when she handed him the change without using the tray, Naganuma became enraged and yelled, “Don’t you know about the coronavirus?”
The store manager tried to calm him down but Naganuma punched him in the face. The cashier called police who said Naganuma was drunk at the time of his arrest.
Naganuma was quoted by police as saying: “I was angry because the cashier handed me back my change when coronavirus cases are on the rise. She should have used the tray.”

As for the ubiquitous blue tray which acts as a intermediary between customer and cashier.. this is the normal way of Japanese life - so it's sort of understandable that an old guy could get frustrated.... I've see the foreign cashiers avoid using that tray, maybe through a lapse of thought, but it doesn't bother me- I'm not going to cause a fuss - as the handling of Cash itself is troublesome, and you should wash your hands afterwards.
Use a Credit Card - gain the points for doing so, and use them to buy other stuff, or fly somewhere for free - once the Virus situation is over.

Cash-less payments?! Grrrr... those people who use them, are keeping the rest of us waiting in line, increasing our chance of infection from others around us! Get a credit card - it works, and is quick!

Don't even use cash
Use cash-less payment to be safer

Yes. Or if the Shochu drinker was a real man and not just an overgrown baby?

Well I definitely would never punch anybody in the face, but I don't like it either when they hand me the money in these times ..I just tell them politely in Japanese to, leave the money on the tray .
Theses are trying times for us all .

Let me make this easier for you to understand:
Different people. Reading helps.

Yet another oyaji brimming with anger and frustration. What is it with getting older that makes these people so angry?

Hey genius, next time use a vending machine instead.
Never heard of it. What is that?
Kind of defeats the purpose of your precious tray, doesn't it?
sixty nine dude!

Fuzzy nailed it about comprehension. Thanks.

Common sense clearly at work...yeah right..
Fuzzy
Cashier and Manager are different people. Just in case you missed it.
Fuzzy
Comprehension not a strong point of some readers on this site....
The cashier handed over the change. The manager was assaulted by the drunk mornon when trying to calm the drunk moron.

ATM-01 The cashier was a woman. The manager was a man. Naturally when the manager heard the ruckus, he came to talk to the old drunk and got punched. I would assume the woman stayed safe behind the counter / cash register.

*"....Naganuma punched him in the face. The cashier called police..."*
Was it a she or a he?

Dude, she touched the money! On the tray or directly into your hand makes no difference.

Way too much recollection occurring here. Didn't state he was drunk even though he was... Fatal mistakes.

Vince, it was the (male) manager of the store that he punched, not the female cashier.
Not that that makes it any more excusable.

@Doug: Thank you, I needed a laugh. :-)

Didn't know the tray has a disinfection feature built-in. Hey Taiwan...please send us 2 million coin trays ASAP.

A drunk buying more drinks!
Isn't he scared his hand might catch something if he punches someone in the face?

a sad old man assaulting a young woman again

Nasty, violent drunk. I bet he isn’t washing his hands or social distancing.
